Connor Cruise didn't name names in his latest tweet, but he made his loyalty to his soon-to-be divorced dad, Tom Cruise, clear all the same.

When it comes to Tom Cruise's family, the ties that bind seem to be tight ones.

The star's two children with ex Nicole Kidman, Connor and Isabella Cruise, have so far remained mum following the bombshell news of their father's divorce from Katie Holmes.

Now, Connor seems to be weighing in, taking to Twitter to allude to the news.

But has he taken a side?

"#LaFamilia Always. Friends Come And Go, But Family Is Forever," the 17-year-old implied in a post that he retweeted on Sunday.

Connor has been especially tight with his father ? who turned 50 Tuesday ? these last few weeks, recently accompanying the "Mission: Impossible" star to a Friars Club gala in New York City where he was honored with the group's prestigious Entertainment Icon Award. (Little sis Suri was there, too, but Isabella was MIA.)

Also MIA these days? Holmes' wedding ring.

The 33-year-old, who is reportedly seeking sole custody of Suri, 6, stepped out in Manhattan yesterday sans her sparkler to attend the taping of an episode of "Project Runway."

Holmes has been hunkering down in New York City following the split, amid speculation that Cruise's commitment to Scientology played a key role in their relationship's demise.

The church has also shot down reports that it dispatched a surveillance team to monitor her activities.

Meanwhile, Cruise, who's been on location in Iceland filming the sci-fi flick "Oblivion," has hired Dennis Wasser to represent him in the divorce ? the same attorney who handled his divorce from Kidman in 2001.

Researcher profile: Heather Gray on life at Cern #lnlm12

Heather Gray, originally from South Africa and currently working at CERN, is one of the attendees?producing a video diary to document her time at the Lindau meeting this year. I caught up with her over email just before the start of the meeting to find out what a day?s work at CERN is really like ? and what she could tell me about the hunt for the Higgs boson.

Can you tell me about your research?

I work on the ATLAS experiment, one of four at the Large Hadron?Collider (LHC). During my PhD I spent most of the time working on the?pixel detector, which is the table-top sized detector right at the?heart of ATLAS. I was also one of the main contributors to the first?physics paper published by ATLAS in which we measured the number of?charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions. Since becoming?a fellow at CERN, I have continued to work on charged track?reconstruction and, in particular, on the optimisation of the?algorithms for the higher than anticipated number of proton-proton?collisions per event at the LHC. My physics focus has switched to the?Higgs boson. I am working on a search for the Higgs using the decay to?a pair of bottom quarks. If the Higgs exists and has a low mass, then?this will be a crucial channel in determining that an observed?resonance is actually the Higgs boson.

Can you tell me anything about the search for the Higgs boson? Do you think we?ll have a definitive answer by the end of the year?

At the moment we?re all very busy analysing the data to present?updated results at the ICHEP conference which starts in Australia next?week. So right now, I can?t say anything definitive, but you might?want to ask me the same question again at the end of next week. Given?the excellent performance of the LHC this year, I expect that we?should have enough data by the end of this run to give a definitive?answer about whether the Standard Model Higgs boson exists or not.

Will you work have practical applications beyond the experiments at CERN?

If we were able to answer this question right now, it would certainly?simplify our lives in terms of obtaining funding, but the honest?answer, is that when one does this type of fundamental research, the?practical applications come such a long time after, that one never has?a clear idea of them at the time that the research is being performed.?The other way to think about this is historically: in the end pretty?much all the ground-breaking discoveries resulting in amazing?practical applications, but these were not developed by those people?making the discoveries. The applications were done by others, later.

What is it like being a PhD student at CERN?

There is a great sense of community amongst PhD students at CERN?because there are typically a few hundred of us there for a similar?period. I really enjoyed being at CERN because it meant that I was in?the centre of the detector development and commissioning and now with all the physics results that are being produced. On the other hand,?Switzerland is quite an expensive place, so it was not the easiest?place to live from a financial perspective whilst being on a student?s?salary.

What is an average day like for you?

My days can be quite variable, but the most typical day would be as?follows: Cycling to work, pain chocolat and espresso in restaurant one?(on a nice day, this has a view of Mt Blanc), answering emails for a?few hours, attending meetings to either show or discuss our latest?results, a few hours programming to update the results and then?informal meetings over coffee with a couple people. Our days don?t?tend to be very quiet?

What are you most looking forward to about attending this year?s Lindau meeting?

I?m not entirely sure what to expect, but I think I?m very interested?in getting to know all the different people who will be there and to?hear the talks from people in different fields. Being at CERN, I tend?to hear about almost everything that is going on in particle physics,?but I don?t have all that much exposure to other fields. I?m also?looking forward to enjoying the summer sun by the lakeside.

Pinpointing history of droughts through exploration of tree rings: Unexpected complexity in U. S. West's patterns of drought

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Through an exploration of tree rings and oxygen isotopes, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are now able to better pinpoint the history of droughts in the arid and semiarid areas of the American West.

A paper published in the online July 2 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences explores the Medieval Climate Anomaly, a particularly warm period occurring in the northern hemisphere of the American West around 950 to 1250 C.E. While this time period is known as being a "dry period," the Pitt researchers have discovered an unexpected complexity to the patterns of drought.

"East of the Cascade Mountains, the Pacific Northwest is now dry and hot in the summer and wet in the winter," said Byron A. Steinman, principal investigator on the project who earned his PhD in geology from Pitt in 2011 and is now a postdoctoral researcher at Penn State University. "We've found that it may not have been dry in the winter in the Pacific Northwest during the Medieval Climate Anomaly."

Steinman, who worked with Pitt professor of geology and planetary science Mark B. Abbott, began by studying tree rings, which often can record past precipitation and temperatures. However, tree rings are more accurate at recording this information during the spring and summer months, when the tree is growing and not lying dormant. To determine the validity of the tree-ring data, the researchers decided to undertake a study of oxygen isotopes for comparison. They explored isotopes found in nearly 1,500 years of bottom-of-lake sediments from two bodies of water in Washington state: Castor Lake and Lime Lake. The isotopic composition of these sediments, says Steinman, can reflect the amount of water entering a lake, especially during the wet season.

The researchers paid particular attention to the calcium carbonate in the water (shown in the form of calcite), as the oxygen in this mineral relates directly to the isotope ratio of lake water. Castor Lake is on a plateau, and the water inflow comes only from precipitation and groundwater. Therefore, no water is lost through evaporation. However, Lime Lake loses the majority of its water through a permanent outflow stream. By comparing the two lakes, the researchers could determine the water balance between evaporation and precipitation.

To pinpoint the time of the drought, the researchers looked at two stable isotopes of oxygen -- oxygen 16 and oxygen 18 -- in the sediments. Oxygen 16 is lighter than oxygen 18, and so during evaporation more of it is released -- the calcite in the sediments containing more of the oxygen 18. If the lakes are full of water, however, there will be more oxygen 16 in the calcite. The layers of sediments that are laid down each year can be dated either using carbon 14 dating of organic material or by locating layers of tephra (volcanic ash).

In the end, however, what they found was a mismatch of data.

"The tree ring and isotope data matched up on a short-term, decadal scale," said Steinman. "However, on a longer-term, century scale, the records diverged. The tree-ring data suggests dry conditions during the Medieval Climate Anomaly summers while the isotope data suggest wetter-than-expected winters."

In the paper, the researchers suggest a strong centennial relationship over the past 1,500 years between winter precipitation and the climate variability patterns that shift about every 20 to 30 years in the Pacific (known as Pacific Decadal Oscillation-PDO). PDO is linked to the El Nino Southern Oscillation, a tropical phenomenon that influences global weather patterns.

"Before and during the Medieval Climate Anomaly, the North Pacific Ocean was warmer, and Washington had a greater precipitation than during the Little Ice Age, which occurred from 1450 to about 1850 C.E., when there was less precipitation," said Steinman.

Steinman hopes to continue this study, producing additional quantitative precipitation records with different lake systems, to better understand these climate phenomena.

Other researchers on this project were Michael E. Mann, professor of meteorology and geosciences and director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center; Nathan D. Stansell, a former Pitt Ph.D. student who graduated in 2009 and now a research fellow at The Ohio State University's Byrd Polar Research Center; and Bruce Finney, professor of biological sciences at Idaho State University.
