Sanjay Gupta On Your Career: Have A Sense Of Purpose - Business ...

A lot of people would pay good money to be Sanjay Gupta.

The neurosurgeon has built a media empire as?CNN's chief medical correspondent, and even had the guts to turn down President Obama.

He recently spoke with?Forbes contributor Dan Schawbel?about how he built his career, and says that?the No. 1 key to success is having a sense of purpose, whether it comes from faith, family or work:?"Every morning, remind yourself what your purpose is and how this day will help you achieve that purpose."

Gupta also says you should do something that scares you every day, and?shared what it was like to start reporting on national television:

As a neurosurgeon, I have spent years training my hands and my mind to be cool under pressure. If an aneurysm ruptures, the clock has started ticking, and there is no time to be nervous. Still, the first time I was on television, I certainly had the jitters. The butterflies were in my stomach right before the live segment and I knew this was a big audience. I wanted every word neatly planned, and a message that was pitch perfect. It was not that long after that I realized it was possible to ?over-think? things in television.?So, the first lesson was to simply be myself.?

Pa. gov: 2-year Sandusky investigation necessary

(AP) ? Prosecutors needed about two years between the first report of child sexual abuse involving Jerry Sandusky and the filing of charges because authorities needed to build an "ironclad case" against him, Gov. Tom Corbett said Monday.

Corbett, then the state attorney general, oversaw the start of the Sandusky investigation after the former Penn State assistant coach was barred from a high school in 2009 when a mother complained about Sandusky. Charges were filed last November.

"I think it surprises some people, the length of time it took," Corbett said. "But having been an assistant DA, an assistant U.S. attorney and handling cases like this, I understood that you have to do a complete investigation and get as many witnesses as you possibly can."

Corbett said the wisdom of the investigation's deliberate pace was evident in the jury's decisive verdict on Friday ? convicting Sandusky on all but three counts.

"I think the jury demonstrated with their convictions on 45 of 48 counts that it was an ironclad case," Corbett told CBS' "This Morning."

While defending the slower pace of the investigation, Corbett also defended the speed with which Sandusky's case went from grand jury presentment to trial ? seven months. Defense attorney Joe Amendola has said he and fellow attorney Karl Rominger didn't have enough time to prepare their defense and even asked to withdraw from the case because they weren't prepared.

"I'm not surprised that they would say that," Corbett said.

"Obviously it will be the subject of an appeal at some point in time. ... But in this case the jury had the opportunity to hear the compelling testimony of these now young men who were young boys who suffered at the hands of this pedophile."

The current state attorney general, Linda Kelly, told NBC's "Today" show that all parties involved knew the judge intended to move quickly. She said prosecutors supported that decision because Sandusky was on house arrest while awaiting trial.

"We were anxious just to bring the case to a conclusion and move to have his bond revoked and taken into custody," Kelly said.

Sandusky, 68, remains behind bars in the Centre County Correctional Facility, where he's been held since late Friday. It could be months before he's sentenced, and his own attorneys say he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Kelly said Sandusky's sentence will be up to the judge, but she believes the severity of the charges merits a harsh punishment.

"Our prosecution team will ask the judge to fashion a sentence that reflects the horrific acts Mr. Sandusky committed, that takes into account the number of victims that are involved here and the fact that he really does represent a clear and present danger to the community," Kelly said.

Sandusky's conviction is only just the start of possibly years of legal proceedings over the case. Besides appeals, there remains an active investigation into Sandusky by the state attorney general's office as well as a federal investigation.

Corbett said Penn State trustees are still awaiting the results of an internal investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh into the school's handling of the Sandusky case.

Barklage's two goals lead Red Bulls?past United

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:04 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - A long trek to the scoring column for Brandon Barklage and Jan Gunnar Solli ended Sunday night with the defense-minded twosome accounting for all the goals in the Red Bulls' 3-2 win over D.C. United.

A franchise-record crowd of 25,187 witnessed Barklage, a defender waived last December by the same United squad he victimized for his first two MLS career goals, tie the game in the 20th minute, then put the Red Bulls up 2-1 in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.

The fans also saw Solli, who has alternated between midfield and defense this year, knock in the winner in the 55th minute for his first career goal in 43 MLS games.

Coach Hans Backe was hard-pressed to think of an unlikelier pair to provide the offense to what he termed the most complete game the Red Bulls (9-4-3) have played this year. His team moved into a first-place tie with United (9-5-3) in the East.

"When Barklage and Solli score, you have to win, probably," Backe said after his squad secured its 30th point and ran its mark to 6-1-2 over its last nine games.

Barklage played 11 of his 22 career MLS games with United before that team told him he "couldn't cut it" there and waived him last December. He got his first goal almost by accident in an action-packed first half when he flashed across the goalmouth to left-foot Joel Lindpere's low corner kick past keeper Bill Hamid.

"It was a great ball in, near post," said Barklage, whose goal followed a difficult opening in which D.C.'s Chris Pontius scored his franchise's fastest goal at 31 seconds. It was the second-fastest goal ever scored against the Red Bulls, coming a dozen seconds later than New England Revolution forward Jose Casela's goal at 19 seconds in 2005. "The ball came in my space and luckily I got a foot on it. I started celebrating right away."

Barklage put the Red Bulls up in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. Lurking on the right side, Barklage knocked in a one-time volley after Rafa Marquez's free kick, caused when D.C.'s Robbie Russell brought down Mehdi Ballouchy just outside the box. The free kick caromed high off the defensive wall.

"It took me four years to do it," said Barklage, who signed with the Red Bulls in February after trying out with assistant coach Mike Petke and playing in three preseason games in January. "There's a lot of history in D.C. for me. Luckily, they didn't come here and get a point or three points."

Solli saw to that in the 55th minute, putting in his own rebound of a shot off Lindpere's feed for a 3-1 lead.

"It was a long run for the first goal," Solli said. "A long time. It was nice to bury that. Now it's up to me to try to get into (scoring) positions. But it'll be nice to see the replay because I haven't done it."

Except for the first minute, the Red Bulls dominated the opening 55 minutes before wearing down over the final stretch, allowing United several good opportunities. Pontius tightened the score in the 66th minute with his second goal, his fifth this season against the Red Bulls thanks to his first career hat trick in their meeting April 22.

But the defense held. And the offense was dominant well into the second half.

"They were finding seams and we weren't too happy," Hamid said. "You could say we gave this game away in the first half. Once we score early like that, we've got to keep up the pressure and not let up because teams are going to punish us, especially on the road."

AT&T Jail breaking IPHONE 3gs and upgrading version

They are wrong, the baseband can be preserved or if the phone is old enough, can be updated to iPad baseband and then downgraded back to a unlockable baseband that has functional GPS(iPad BB allows unlock, but breaks GPS). If you don't want to unlock using jailbreak tools, then by all means update, it will not hurt anything and chances are ATT will give you a free unlock if you have completed a two year contract with the phone(call them or use the web chat to ask for a unlock, you provide the phone's IMEI and wait a few days for the email). If you want to be able to unlock using jailbreak tools, you will want to either preserve the BB(I assume you have 05.11.07) using a NO_BB custom IPSW made with Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze to update with or just update with stock, then if your phone is older than week 28 in 2011 you can flash the iPad BB followed by downgrade from iPad BB to 05.13.04, then jailbreak and install ultrasn0w to unlock.

Only thing to worry about is, if the phone is newer than week 28 of 2011 and you are trying to flash the iPad baseband, it will brick the phone.

Timbers take care of Sounders

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:34 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Timbers vanquished their archrivals and took some pressure off their embattled coach.

Kris Boyd scored his fifth goal of the season, David Horst converted a header and the Timbers earned a much-needed 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

"I thought we showed an unbelievable amount of character," said Portland coach John Spencer, who had been dealing with reports he was on the hot seat. "When (people) say players are not playing for me, I didn't see anyone not playing for me today."

Portland (4-6-4) jumped ahead early and held off the attacking Sounders for its first win in the league series since joining the MLS last year.

The Timbers went up in the 16th minute when Boyd slipped past the defense and sent a cross from Steven Smith into the net. David Horst scored on a header nine minutes later for the 2-0 lead.

Seattle (7-5-4) saw its winless streak extend to seven games, the longest in its MLS history, now in its fourth season. Seattle was coming off a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City and a 4-1 loss to Montreal. Still, the Sounders were favored against Spencer's unseasoned Portland squad.

The Timbers entered the match in last place in the Western Division and 16th in the league in goals with 12. Portland took its third shutout in five games last Sunday in a 1-0 loss to the L.A. Galaxy. The team's disappointing start to the season and flagging offense led to media reports this week that Spencer's job could be in jeopardy if the Timbers fell flat against Seattle.

The Timbers weren't flat but the early lead didn't feel permanent against the aggressive Sounders.

Eddie Johnson dribbled past Horst and fired a shot past straining keeper Troy Perkins into the far corner of the net in the 59th minute. Freddy Montero had a narrow miss in the 74th minute and Johnson narrowly missed a header in stoppage time.

As the Sounders kept up a desperate attack, the game became chippy, leading to several pushing and shoving incidents toward the end. Montero and Portland's Lovel Palmer were both issued red cards in the final minutes.

It was the third MLS meeting for the longtime Cascadia Cup rivals. Last year, in Portland's inaugural season, the teams played to a draw in Seattle before the Sounders won 3-2 in Portland.

While Boyd said the win served "to get everybody off our backs and show that we can play," Horst said things never seemed that dire. He saw the win as an opportunity to build.

"Last year, we had a turning point (in a 3-0 win over the league-leading Galaxy), where we had a little run," the defender said. "Hopefully, that's what this is - a turning point."
