BRIGHTON, Mass. (www.incnow.tv) - Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend has provided an update recent diagnosis of brain and lung cancer.
In a statement dated Jan. 9, and released by the diocese Friday, D'Arcy says he has a "very rare form of cancer." He writes that he is in the process of 15 days of radiation, which have helped with many of the symptoms; and that the success of the radiation treatments could determine whether he receives chemotherapy.
D'Arcy was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer after being hospitalized while visiting family in the Boston area over Christmas. The bishop beat prostate cancer in 2011, the diocese previously said.
"Pray that I will accept this and whatever is to come with a full heart and a full 'Yes' to God.," the retired prelate says. "I am grateful to God for the extraordinary life He has given me. (Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy's entire statement can be read here.)
D'Arcy, 80, also reflected on his time as a priest and bishop.
"I never felt worthy of it," he says. "I thank God with all my heart that I was appointed by Christ through the Church as shepherd of our beloved diocese."
D'Arcy concludes his letter with a somber reminder of what he is fighting.
"Above everything, pray for me and for my soul and that I will be found worthy to enter into the heavenly place that God has prepared for all of us, where I hope to meet my dear parents and so many loved ones."
D'Arcy served as Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend from 1985 to 2010, when Catholic Church rules mandated he retire. He was succeeded by Bishop Kevin Rhoades.
