Petty controversy: Facebook vs. Nirvana's 'Nevermind' baby (The Week)

New York ? In a curious move, the social-networking site banned an iconic (seemingly innocent) image, then relented after a public outcry

The controversy: Facebook administrators went to rather inexplicable lengths in their efforts to erase pornographic images from the site when they removed the iconic cover of Nirvana's 1991 Nevermind album from the band's Facebook page. Fans crying censorship protested the removal of the photo featuring a naked baby floating in a pool, which had been uploaded to celebrate the album's 20th anniversary. Facebook at first stood firm with its decision, citing company policy, but later relented and reinstated the cover image.

The reaction: "Hmm...not sure censoring one of the most iconic pieces of album artwork ever produced is going to do much for Facebook's street-cred," says Gerald Lynch at Tech Digest. "Whatever their concerns surrounding nude children, this seems more than a little rash." Here's a suggestion, Facebook, says Brett Warner at Ology: Common sense. "Is it really that impossible for Facebook?s staff of photo-pullers to differentiate between an iconic photograph and my cousin?s racy bachelor party snapshots?" It's not that simple, though, says Meredith Singer at AllFacebook. These decency rules leave "a lot of room for human error and subjectivity" about what's deemed appropriate material. It's become a familiar pattern: First, people complain about the photo, then other people complain about the censorship.

US presses N. Korea for 'irreversible' disarmament move (AFP)

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) ? The United States on Thursday pressed North Korea to take "concrete and irreversible" steps to give up its nuclear arsenal at talks on how to improve hostile relations.

The US State Department said the first day of the talks in New York had been "serious and businesslike". North Korea's representative also called the atmosphere "constructive".

While the United States has stressed that North Korea must make moves to scrap its nuclear weapons if six decades of tensions are to be ended, it was not clear if North Korea had made any specific demands.

The US special envoy on North Korea, Stephen Bosworth, and the North's first vice foreign minister Kim Kye-Gwan held about four-and-a-half hours of talks at the US mission to the United Nations.

"The atmosphere was good, the meeting was constructive and interesting. We exchanged views on general issues," Kim said during a break.

The US State Department said: "Today?s discussions have been serious and businesslike. We look forward to continuing our meetings tomorrow."

The department highlighted comments by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the talks are "exploratory" to determine if North Korea is ready to carry out a 2005 accord and take "concrete and irreversible steps toward denuclearization."

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in Washington that "words are not enough" and "we need action" on disarmament.

The New York talks are "a chance for us to sound out the North Koreans" and "gauge their seriousness", the spokesman said.

The US government also stressed that it was closely coordinating with South Korea and other partners in talks with the reclusive North.

The international community is anxious to see North Korea return to six-nation talks -- also including the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia -- which Pyongyang stormed out of in late 2008.

North Korea agreed in principle at the talks in 2005 to scrap its weapons program, but staged nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

The North's disclosure in November that it had a uranium enrichment plant, adding a new way to make a nuclear bomb, has added to disarmament tensions.

Clinton invited the North Korean official to New York after a meeting between nuclear envoys from North and South Korea at an Asian security forum in Bali, Indonesia last week.

The North highlighted its mistrust of US motives ahead of the talks.

At a UN debate on disarmament on Wednesday, the North's UN ambassador Sin Son Ho said a proposed US missile defense shield in Europe would spark a "new nuclear arms race" and that the United States had no "moral justifications" to lecture other countries about proliferation.

North Korea's official news agency however said in a commentary Wednesday that an agreement with the United States formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War could become a "first step" to peace on the Korean peninsula and "denuclearization."

Diplomats and experts have warned the North is unlikely to make concessions in the talks.

In a sign of the diplomatic minefield that the United States has been navigating in its dealings with North Korea, one of Bosworth's aides was seen carrying a copy of "How Enemies Become Friends," a book by Charles Kupchan, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton, into the meeting.

Kupchan champions the cause of US engagement with its enemies.

"The absence of trust on both sides is at this point so significant that a kind of grand bargain (between the US and North Korea) is unlikely -- if only because it wouldn't pass muster with domestic skeptics here in the United States, particularly on Capitol Hill," Kupchan told AFP.

He suggested that interim measures such as North Korea allowing inspections of certain sites or western powers giving more assistance and economic aid to the impoverished North could help "the confidence building measures broaden into the trust needed to strike a lasting deal."

In all the history of the world, or at least this year, does any disaster really compare to the tragedy unleashed on millions of innocent Netflix subscribers with the recent news of price hikes and having to make a choice between streaming and DVDs?

We know for many of you, this is far from a laughing matter, but?a site created by Will Ferrell (among others), Funny or Die, with the help of Jason Alexander, would like to add a little levity to the situation in offering this video:

Ok, fun aside, this is more than a $72 increase over the course of a year and not just middle-class, Pilates-practicing white people are affected. But sometimes, you have to take a step back and do some self-reflection if it's really worth all the energy and grief being put into railing about it.

When Netflix separated its DVD and streaming plans, and then raised its prices 60 percent, it caused waves of outrage and played out on Facebook where nearly 81,000 vented about the changes.

While there are more than 23 million subscribers, a vocal faction of them were?? and are?? mad enough to leave Netflix forever. On one of our recent polls, 45 percent of 27,415 people (which comes to 12,381) who voted said they'd make a clean break with any plan and cancel. The report mentioned in that story predicted at least 2 million members would take their business elsewhere. Netflix's letter to shareholders about its second-quarter showed a significant drop in drawing new U.S. subscribers, bringing it back to the same gains it had in the third quarter of 2010. But overall, Netflix still gained members domestically, with more than 24 million subscribers in its second quarter vs. nearly 23 million in the first quarter of 2011.

And it expected a backlash to its announcement to?split its DVD and streaming plans, telling shareholders, "Some subscribers will cancel Netflix or downgrade their Netflix plans. We expect most to stay with us?because each of our $7.99 plans is an incredible value. We hate making our subscribers upset with us,?but we feel like we provide a fantastic service and we?re working hard to further improve the quality and?range of our streaming content in Q4 and beyond."

Over on Facebook, the rage against the Netflix machine is still going, on other threads after that initial announcement. Even posting an update on the addition of "Mad Men" to the stream has done nothing to calm the masses down. See this comment:

Their deals with studios are small, limiting what they can get, or will get in the future. You must buy a device to view netflix on your tv. You need a data cable from your home router to the netflix device. You can get a wireless connection but there are many problems with wireless. Video streaming technology isn't "there" yet it is still too new to go mainstream.?

So, there's very little laughter for those upset with Netflix. But c'mon, that video, didn't it make you chuckle, a little?

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, July 29 (UPI) ? The military remains one of the most trusted Pakistani institutions although its reputation dipped after the death of Osama bin Laden, a poll indicated Friday.

A Gallup poll taken May 9-12 found 78 percent of Pakistanis have confidence in the military. That was down from 86 percent in an earlier poll, mostly conducted before a raid by U.S. Navy SEALs assassinated bin Laden May 2.

The military is trusted in most countries, including the United States, Gallup said. Pakistan had a military government for almost a decade, ending in 2008.

?In Pakistan?s case, this high confidence likely reflects the military?s strong, ongoing presence in civil society and reinforces how relatively weak the civilian government and institutions still are,? Gallup said in its analysis of the poll results.

The Abu Dhabi Gallup Center also questioned Pakistanis about their trust in the national government in the May poll. Less than one-third of respondents, 31 percent, said they had confidence in the government, an insignificant uptick from 28 percent in the earlier poll.

Gallup conducted face-to-face interviews with about 1,000 adults between April 25 and May 14. A second poll of 1,000 adults was done May 9-12. The margin of error for both was 4 percentage points.

House delays vote on debt limit, spending cuts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Republican leaders have abruptly delayed a vote on a bill extending the government's debt limit and cutting federal spending.

House Speaker John Boehner's spokesman, Michael Steel, said it was "a sensible assumption" that Boehner was still trying to round up the needed votes. Steel said the vote would still happen Thursday night.

The House was nearing the end of its debate on the legislation when Republicans suddenly shifted gears. They instead moved to a bill renaming a post office in Peoria, Ill.

GOP leaders have been laboring to line up the 216 votes the debt bill would need to pass the House, and they have encountered opposition from some conservatives. There are 240 Republicans in the House.

Few if any Democrats are expected to support the measure.

For me, a new experience!

Let me commence out by saying that I'm presently 56 years old and everything I recognise when it comes to video game consoles may fit on a fingernail clipping. A couple of years ago, my associate purchased me a PS2, because she had recalled my mentioning in passing (after seeing advertisements for a good deal of finelooking interesting sci-fi-themed games) that I was curious regarding what's going on in that medium. After she purchased me the PS2, the only game I purchased was Grand Tourismo 4 (she had given me with the solace itself Superman Returns, but I didn't like it), with which I relaxed by racing the realistically rendered cars around galore impressively elaborate tracks, but never getting into the more sophisticated levels of the game. Then when it comes to four months ago, my son lent me Resident Evil 4. Of course, you gamers recognise this was a benchmark in game development, and may understand why I became wholly immersed in it. It was veritably a creepy experience. You weren't just WATCHING a horror movie; you were IN it. After I beat it, I went through it three more times. Then I purchased God of War II, rather by accident (I chosen it for the price, a mere $20), incognizant that this, too, was a hit game, and another benchmark. The graphics were so good, so stunning, so grand and sweeping, I played it six times. Again, hours seemed like minutes; I'd plainly lose time. I was now addicted, and taking into account how good a PS2 was, I figured that the PS3 -- with it is Blu-ray engineering science -- had to be out-of-this-world incredible. Four weeks ago, I purchased this PS3 slim, and it has given me enjoyment that made it worth each penny, and then some.

I can't speak to the technical specifications of the PS3, or how it compares to other consoles. I'm writing rather to other middle-aged clients who might have stumbled on this page, perchance buying goods for galore young relative -- son or daughter; niece or nephew; or grandchild -- to suggest that you ought to consider buying one of these babies for yourself. This is one powerful piece of amusement technology. The PS3 Slim is a superior product when equated with the PS3 80/160GB models. This comparatively inexpensive, feature packed, versatile gaming machine, multimedia hub and great Blu-ray player, earns back the 5th star that I granted the Classic models and I didn't feel that the PS3 80/160GB models deserved.

Granted, when equated to the PS3 Classic, the PS3 Slim lacks PS2 compatibility, has 2 less USB ports and and it lacks media card slots but these shortcomings are offset by the significantly lower price, energy efficiency, larger storage and an modified CPU and HDMI. And, keeping hope alive by feeding it rumors, who knows? Sony just might add PS2 software emulation once it stops fabricating the PS2 sometime, next year.

MY TEST DRIVE IMPRESSIONS

The good news is that you may do just with regards to everything you did with the PS3 80/160GB models and in the precise same way. This is not meant to be a 'fan' statement. So, revisiting the comparings above, the PS3 still holds the vantage when it comes to Blu-ray and motion-sensitive controllers. The PS3 120GB's drive while littler is still effortlessly upgradeable while the Xbox is not (my 120GB Slim got it is 500GB upgrade within days of buy at closely no cost given that I was competent to reuse the 120GB drive for other purposes).

If you are on the upgrade path, less than $90 would buy you a 500GB drive. The one that I tested would be the 500GB Scorpio Blue Mobile Sata 5400RPM 8MB 2.5IN which substituted my laptop's 60GB drive and a friend's 80GB PS3 HDD. The nice thing when it comes to upgrading your disk is that you are also going to be left with a perfectly good 80GB or $160GB or 120GB drive which you may place into a cheap enclosure, and the StarTech AT2510U2 InfoSafe 2.5-Inch USB/SATA Hard Drive Enclosure worked for me. After I upgraded my own console to 320Gb, I employed the free leftover drive as a backup device for family photos.

As a proud owner of a PS3, I was closely following developments of when the rumored (and highly-anticipated) PS3 Slim would come out. STILL NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE
This is my one major gripe with the Playstation 3. It in truth wouldn't have killed Sony to include this feature, as the basi Playstation 3's did in fact include backwards compatibility with older Playstation 2 games. A lot of people counter by either saying (1) it doesn't make sense to buy a PS3 to play PS2 games, (2) the graphics on the PS3 are better anyway so why bother with older games, and (3) including backwards compatibility would cannibalize PS3 game sales.

While those arguments might have their merits, I'm still frustrated that my massive PS2 library can't be played on the PS3, and was actually hoping that Sony would include backwards compatibility on the Slim! I loved the fact the PS2 was backwards compatible with PS1 games, and genuinely wish that Sony would reconsider this decision.

COMPARED TO OTHER SYSTEMS:
PS3 vs. WII
I think comparing the PS3 directly to the Wii is a bit like comparing apples to oranges, since they offer such dissimilar experiences. The Wii in my sentiment is more family-friendly, while the PS3 is better for more graphics-intense games geared towards dissimilar gemographics. I'm a huge fan of Nintendo, and I love their very family-oriented game offerings. I own a DS and Wii and still love Mario as much as the days back when I played the basi Nintendo (NES). In addition, I think Nintendo's motion-sensitive controllers for the Wii are very modern and fun to play with! Unfortunately however, for most gamers, the divergence in game quality is noticeable when comparing the two systems. The PS3 has AMAZING graphics. On an HD Television, you observe such crisp details while playing the PS3. The Wii features only Standard Definition output, which noticeably weakens it when equated to the other next-gen consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360.

PS3 vs. XBOX 360
Microsoft has an impressive gaming consolation in their Xbox 360 and there are a great deal of astounding titles exclusive to the Xbox, but in the end you get less bang for your buck when equated to the Playstation 3:

It's unrealistic in a way that's really damaging to vulnerable young people and effects all of us."

The advertising standards council, which is now allowed to consider the social impact of the ads as a criteria on whether they are acceptable, acted after a complaint from a lawmaker, Jo Swinson, who praised the decision to ban the images.

"This ruling demonstrates that the advertising regulator is acknowledging the dishonest and misleading nature of excessive retouching," Swinson said in a statement released by her office.

"Pictures of flawless skin and super-slim bodies are all around, but they don't reflect reality. With one in four people feeling depressed about their body, it's time to consider how these idealized images are distorting our idea of beauty."

Swinson ? the co-founder of the Campaign for Body Confidence ? said Roberts and Turlington are naturally beautiful women who do not need to have their images retouched. She had earlier challenged a makeup ad campaign featuring 1960s model Twiggy.

The digitally altered photographs show Roberts and Turlington promoting foundation sold by Lancome and Maybelline, two L'Oreal brands.

Roberts was promoting a product called Teint Miracle and Turlington was touting an anti-ageing product called The Eraser.

In separate rulings, the advertising council said the company went too far in its claims for each product.

The company had defended both advertisements as accurate despite the retouching.

In a statement released by its New York press office, Maybelline officials said they were "disappointed" by the adverse ruling. It said the ad for The Eraser was accurate.

"Even though the ad features an obviously illustrated effect, some lines are still clearly visible beneath the illustration and we do not believe that the ad exaggerates the effect that can be achieved using this product," the company statement said.

The service was being followed by cremation at London's Golders Green Crematorium before the family begins Shiva, a Jewish traditional period of mourning.

An autopsy held Monday failed to determine the cause of the singer's death. Police are awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which will take two to four weeks.

On Monday the singer's father, mother and brother visited the house where she died, thanking mourners who had left flowers and cards.

Father Mitch Winehouse said "Amy was about one thing and that was love."

"Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends and to you guys as well," he told fans.

Winehouse released only two albums in her short career -- winning five Grammy awards for the second, "Back to Black" -- and often made headlines because of drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, destructive relationships and abortive performances.

Since her death, her records have re-entered album charts around the world, and tributes have poured in from fans and fellow musicians.

George Michael called her "the most soulful vocalist this country has ever seen," and soul singer Adele said she "paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again."
