Back in 1958 Pierre Cardin signed up a battalion of students for Paris' first ever men's catwalk show.
As he prepares for a comeback show on Sunday, the eve of his 90th birthday, the style veteran thinks he still has a lot to offer modern man.
The last active survivor of the great postwar French fashion houses, the Italian-born Cardin is today sole owner of a sprawling luxury empire, but his catwalk shows are few and far between, his last in Paris a women's line in 2010.
"This is a comeback for me, and it's a great pleasure," he told AFP in an interview. "I hadn't shown a man's line in Paris for a very long time. It's a chance to present my style, my personality, what made my name."
"Here is my modern man," the white-haired designer said as he showed off one of Sunday's looks in his Paris office, a black felt jacket with sleeves cut very short, faithful to the space-age theme Cardin has mined on and off since the 1960s.
"Women show off their legs, so I show off men's muscular arms," he explained. "It looks like nothing else, don't you agree? And it's wearable."
Putting on Paris' first menswear fashion show back in the 1950s, before the advent of male models required some lateral thinking.
"I rang up the university deans across Paris -- science, maths, philosophy, medicine -- and asked them to send me some students," he recalled.
"Around 100 turned up. And the show was a triumph," he said. "At the time, some people frowned at seeing a couturier in men's fashion -- but now everyone is in on the game."
Be it branching into men's fashion or ready-to-wear, brand licensing or pushing into Asian markets, which he was first to do a half-century ago, Cardin blazed a trail that many of his contemporaries have since rushed down.
Yet he holds an odd place in the French fashion world, where his relaxed -- even cocky -- attitude towards licensing his name and making money is seen as somehow incompatible with an artist's calling.
"There are a lot of great fortunes out there, but mine is one that I earned through creativity, not betting on horses or the stock-exchange," Cardin said of his personal wealth, estimated in 2009 at 310 million euros ($385 million).
"What I do, I do with passion," he said, showing off an article about his latest grand design, a 2.5-billion-euro futuristic skyscraper called the Palace of Light in his native Venice.

Cardin, who dreamed up the tower together with his architect nephew Rodrigo Basilicati, will lay the first symbolic stone on September 24, with the target of delivering the project in time for the 2015 Universal Exhibition in Milan.
"This is my last great project -- for now at least. Because I have to admit I am getting on in age."

And when it comes to selling Cardin-stamped bath towels or cigarettes?
"Ah, that's commerce, that's something else altogether," he quips back.
For the past two years Cardin's vast empire has been up for sale, but he has yet to find a buyer willing to match his asking price of one billion euros.
"I have had a lot of offers, but when it came to setting a figure I always said no in the end. If you want to buy me, you have pay the right price."
While he can be disarmingly immodest, famously boasting he could dine in his restaurant before catching a show at his own theatre and sleeping in his own hotel, he says his feet are still on the ground.
"I have always been very ambitious. But I am not vain," he insisted.
In fairness, despite the mammoth scale of his business empire -- 800 licensed products across 122 countries -- Cardin's office, which sits above his sole Paris clothing store, is not your typical business tycoon's den.
Wildly messy, the furniture past its best, the room is chock-a-block with old magazines, press clippings, books and paintings, piled thickly on his desk and spilling out of drawers and off shelves.
He fondly shows off a sketchbook signed by Dior. He was the couturier's very first employee, joining him in 1946, before striking out on his own three years later.
"This is where I live. This is my life," he said, thumbing through pictures of himself with Nelson Mandela or Fidel Castro, on the front page of Time magazine in 1968, or Elle from 1973.
"Forty pages for the Cardin special edition at the time -- isn't that something?" he said, rummaging through the archives of his life, showing off a restored chateau here, a line of designer furniture there.
He could go on for hours -- but there is one thing Cardin does not want to mention: turning 90 on Monday.
"Oh, no! Let's not talk about that. Or I'll have to throw you out!" he jokes. "Birthdays are for the young. I have no need for gifts. I am getting an extra year, and that is quite enough!"

The company is stopping short of saying that Flash won't run, but it's evident that Adobe won't help you if the web browser plugin doesn't install (or breaks in spectacular fashion) on that Nexus 7. Just to underscore the point, the firm is also halting new installations of Flash from Google Play as of August 15th. Security updates and other vital patches will continue on for existing users. Any fresh downloads after that fateful day, however, will have to come from Adobe's mausoleum for old versions. The company had already said that HTML5 was the way forward on phones and tablets -- now we know just how quickly it's backing up that claim.

A computer has mastered Sumi-e, a style of oriental ink painting that conveys a scene with just a few, delicate brush strokes.
The accomplishment takes automated image manipulation to a new frontier, according to MIT?s Technology Review, and may open the door for a new photo app to compete with the likes of Instagram.
The challenge Ning Xie and colleagues at the Tokyo Institute of Technology faced was to get a computer to generate natural-looking brush strokes in a repeatable manner.
Previously, researchers have tackled the problem using a so-called dynamic programming approach, but doing so was computationally expensive and only produced a stroke for a specific shape.?
That?s a problem if you want to turn a snapshot of a flower vase on the table into a Sumi-e painting with the touch of a button and do it all again moments later with a picture of your child in a sandbox.
So, Xie?s team used a technique called reinforcement learning, whereby the computer was rewarded when it made nice, smooth lines for a variety of strokes but not when it stroked poorly.
In this way, the computer learned a library full of brush strokes and now calls on them at any time to create a Sumi-e painting.?
The only catch is that humans manually draw contours on a photo that the computer then fills in with strokes.
The technique is explained in a paper posted on arXiv.org and to be presented at the International Conference of Machine Learning in Edinburgh, Scotland.
"The results ... we think are of good quality," Xie and colleagues conclude.

Director Anthony Mandler talks to MTV News about Del Rey and A$AP Rocky's controversial new clip, which has them playing JFK and Jackie O.

Ever since Anthony Mandler wrapped production on Lana Del Rey's "National Anthem" video a month ago, he has spent just about every day trying to avoid talking about it ... mostly because he knew there'd be no shortage of folks doing just that when the clip premiered.
After all, the video — which premiered Wednesday (June 27) and features Del Rey in dual Jacqueline Kennedy/Marilyn Monroe roles and A$AP Rocky as John F. Kennedy — was seemingly destined to create conversation, if not controversy. But now that it's finally been unveiled, he's weighing in on the social and political contexts of the clip (from Portugal, via Skype) to MTV News.
"You see why I held back on talking about it; I didn't want to spoil anything. Anytime you're dealing with the American Camelot of the Kennedys, you're dealing with a packed powder keg," he said. "And really, what Lana was trying to do — this was her concept, she came to me with it, and I kind of dug it out with her — was really look and explore an archetype; just like Shakespeare wrote 'Romeo and Juliet,' and that became the archetype of the forbidden love story.
"And I think the Kennedy relationship, certainly the triangle of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O and Jack Kennedy, became this kind of ideal of what seemed perfect from the outside was maybe rotting from the inside," he continued. "And Lana was really interested in exploring this loss of innocence, this idea that what you think you're experiencing is maybe not what it's always going to be. Because when you say 'Kennedy,' that immediately evokes something, just like when I say 'It's a Romeo and Juliet story.' So I think using that power, that pedigree of the story is a really fascinating place to show the loss of something, the breakdown of something."
Of course, building off that archetype, the "National Anthem" video takes the socially charged stance of re-imagining the main characters as an interracial couple. It was a decision that was bound to raise some eyebrows, which, according to Mandler, was precisely the point.
"We used the Kennedy framework to kind of implement this new Camelot, this racially diverse Camelot, this maybe socially diverse Camelot ... bringing it into the modern era, but still keeping that classic framework," he explained. "There's a kind of micro-commentary of 'This is the new royalty,' you know, A$AP and Lana, trying to pick two people to maybe represent the next generation of something. I think even with an African American president, it's still controversial to see him sitting and playing JFK, it's still taboo, even if it shouldn't be. You're kind of like 'Is this right or wrong? This feels very right, but also feels very wrong at the same time.' And I think in all of Lana's songs, and her image in general, and the person she is, it all fits in. It's kind of like there are two sides of a mirror, and you're not sure which side you're looking at."
And though he's aware the video may rankle some, Mandler wanted to make it clear that "National Anthem" isn't meant to disrespect the Kennedy legacy ... and to that end, he points to the climactic final scene, which re-enacts JFK's 1963 assassination, minus any of the grisly details. Because, to him, the video is less about reinterpreting history and as it is about examining loss, historical or otherwise.
"We didn't want it to be a mockery. How many artists and rappers and singers have you seen running around in badly fitted suits, acting like the president? And I think it may have worked with other people to mock, but that was not what we wanted; we want this to be very serious," he said. "The whole movie kind of hedges on the gunshot, it hedges on that close-up of the hand when the gunshot happens, and you don't see anything violent. What you're used to seeing with the Zapruder film, is this very kind of violent, destructive act; I didn't want to go anywhere near that.
"It was never about re-creating a death scene, it was always about the person sitting next to him," he continued. ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Harnessing the power of the sun has inspired scientists and engineers to look for ways to turn sunlight into clean energy to heat houses, fuel factories and power devices. While a majority of this research focuses on energy production, some researchers are looking at the potential uses of these novel solar technologies in other areas.
Boston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dunwei Wang's work with silicon nanowires and his related construct, Nanonets, has shown these stable, tiny wire-like structures can be used in processes ranging from energy collection to hydrogen-generating water-splitting.
Teaming up with fellow Boston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kian L. Tan, the researchers have taken aim at a role for nanowires in photosynthesis.
Their work has produced a process that closely resembles photosynthesis, employing silicon nanowires to collect light energy to power reactions capable of synthesizing the basic compounds of two popular pain-killing, anti-inflammatory drugs, they report in the current edition of Angewandte Chemie, the journal of the German Chemical Society.
The reaction sequence offers an approach that differs from earlier attempts to sequester carbon dioxide with sunlight and solves the vexing problem of carbon's low selectivity, which so far has limited earlier methods to the production of fuels. Tan and Wang report their process offers the selectivity required to produce complex organic intermediaries capable of developing pharmaceuticals and high-value chemicals.
The process succeeds in taming stubborn carbon, which structurally resists most efforts to harness it for a single chemical product. Typically, refined forms of carbon molecules must first be produced to produce the necessary results.
"If we can start to use carbon dioxide and light to power reactions in organic chemistry, there's a huge benefit to that. It allows you to bypass the middle man of fossil fuels by using light to drive the chemical reaction," said Tan. "The key is the interaction of two fields -- materials and synthetic chemistry. Separately, these fields may not have accomplished this on their own. But together, we combined our knowledge to make it work."
During photosynthesis, plants capture sunlight and use this solar energy and carbon dioxide to fuel chemical reactions.
Tan and Wang used silicon nanowires as a photocathode, exploiting the wire's efficient means of converting solar energy to electrical energy. Electrons released from the atoms in the nanowires are then transferred to organic molecules to trigger chemical reactions.
In this case, the researchers used aromatic ketones, which when struck by electrons become active and attack and bind carbon dioxide. Further steps produced an acid that allowed the team to create the precursors to ibuprofen and naproxen with high selectivity and high yield, the team reports.
Tan and Wang were joined in the research by Research Assistant Guangbi Yuan, PhD '12, graduate student Rui Liu, doctoral student Candice L. Joe, and former doctoral student Thomas E. Lightburn, PhD '11.
Tan said it is no accident that the process so closely resembles natural photosynthesis, as chemists are constantly drawing inspiration from nature in their work.
"Researchers in my field are always drawing inspiration from nature," said Tan. "You take the basic lessons and you try to do it in an artificial way. In this work, we're trying to learn lessons from nature, although we can't copy nature directly."

Scotland's renewable energy output increased by 45% in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period last year.
UK government figures showed Scotland generated 4,590 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy in the first three months of 2012.
This was an increase of 1,435 GWh on the first quarter of 2011.
Scotland is aiming to generate the equivalent of 100% of its electricity needs from renewables by 2020.
The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change also issued revised statistics for 2011 which showed that renewable electricity generation in Scotland was 13,735 GWh in 2011, an increase of 44.3% from 2010 and up 97.3% from 2006.
The Scottish government said that, assuming gross consumption in 2011 was similar to 2010, about 35% of Scotland's electricity needs came from renewables in 2011, beating its interim target of 31%.
'World leader'Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said the figures showed the country was making good progress towards the 2020 target.
He added: "The increase of 45.5% in renewable output in quarter one 2012 compared to quarter one 2011 is particularly encouraging when you consider that 2011 saw the highest output from renewable energy to date.
"Scotland has astounding renewable energy potential, and the Scottish government is committed to ensuring every community in Scotland benefits from the opportunities of renewable energy.

"Scotland is a genuine world leader in green energy and our targets reflect the scale of our natural resources, the strength of our energy capabilities and the value we place on creating new, sustainable industries."
Jenny Hogan, director of policy at Scottish Renewables, said the figures demonstrated that renewable energy was becoming an "ever important of our energy mix".
She added: "Each time you boil a kettle in your home, more and more of that electricity will have been generated from a renewable source such as a wind farm.
"Not only does the renewables industry now employ more than 11,000 people in Scotland, it's helping to reduce our carbon emissions, tackle climate change and insulate us from volatility in the gas market which has been responsible for the major hikes in energy bills over the last few years."
WWF Scotland's head of policy Dr Dan Barlow added: "To ensure Scotland remains on track to a fully renewable future we need to see continued and rapid deployment of all forms of renewables alongside investment in energy efficiency.
"Such a path will help create jobs, reduce pollution and protect households from volatile fossil fuel prices."
Labour Shadow Energy Minister Tom Greatrex said: "Any increase in renewable generation is welcome. The investment needed to make Scotland's renewables potential a reality is supported by consumers across the whole of Britain, not just in Scotland."

Who knew Lego characters had to be somewhere in a hurry? Adafruit did, as it just whipped up a minifig-sized train schedule. The invention mates one of Adafruit's own 1-inch OLED boards with an Arduino Uno controlling the schedule behind the scenes. It looks to be a straightforward project for the DIY types, although the display is currently all show: the schedule doesn't (yet) pair up with the train tracks to automatically let your minifigs know if their trip to the pirate spaceship castle has been delayed by ghosts. Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox feel the pain in the first trailer for the James Patterson adaptation.

Don't cross Alex Cross. Do cross the "Alex Cross" trailer.
Tyler Perry makes his debut as James Patterson's iconic detective and forensic psychologist in the first official trailer for "Alex Cross," which premiered exclusively on Amazon Tuesday (June 26). Previously played by Morgan Freeman in "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider," Cross gets a younger makeover in the Perry-starring flick, as well as an impossibly ripped homicidal-maniac nemesis in the form of "Lost" veteran Matthew Fox.
The trailer is all kinds of bonkers, with Fox shouting out sadistic one-liners and threatening women like it's his job (in this case, it actually is) and Perry doing everything he can to hold it together while going up against one of the most ruthless psychopaths this side of Madea. Tyler Perry's Alex Cross
If there's one word to describe Perry's take on the sharp-minded detective, it's "smooth." The trailer introduces us to a cool and composed Alex sipping drinks with his wife; she needs some convincing to leave Detroit and join Cross on his next assignment. His proposed method of getting her to come with him? "The National Guard and a drink." You had me at "the"!
He Had to Go Back
Fox wholeheartedly embraces his inner Heath-Joker in the "Alex Cross" trailer, playing Michael "The Butcher" Sullivan, a killer who is "fascinated by pain." Cross determines that Sullivan is "ex-military, special forces, judging by his tactics." He's also an Ultimate Fighting Champion, if you can believe it, and has a thing for Doctor Cross' very pretty wife. It's an unusual new shade for the actor most commonly associated with good guys Jack Shephard and Charlie Salinger, but it'll be a fascinating transformation — or train wreck — to behold.
Feel the Burns
Just don't get too distracted by Fox's villainy. Also starring in "Alex Cross" is "Saving Private Ryan" and "Entourage" actor Edward Burns as Cross' partner, Tommy Kane. It's weird seeing Burns in a third-tier role at best; as a writer and director by trade, he tends to be somewhat choosy with his acting roles. (Ignore that "27 Dresses" credit.) So I'm calling it now: Burns is the real bad guy pulling Fox's strings. Then again, I incorrectly called Jeremy Renner as the secret "Mission: Impossible" villain and Jared Harris as a red herring for the real Moriarty in the last "Sherlock Holmes" movie, so take my predictions with a half-cup serving of salt.
Matthew Fox and the Chocolate Factory
Watch at around the two-minute mark as Fox gets his high-tech Augustus Gloop on. If you need further reasons to see "Alex Cross" when it hits theaters this October, I don't know what to tell you.
To Hell and Back Again
"He won't stop. I've seen his face. I've heard his voice," Perry's Cross warns his wife of Fox's killer. "I will meet his soul at the gates of Hell before I let him take a person that I love!" If there's a better alternate ending to "Lost" or the "Madea" films than Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox battling to the death for Satan's amusement, I haven't heard of it. The trailer's action-packed finale is, in a word, surreal, every bit as oddly enjoyable as the promise of Perry versus Fox sounds on paper. This demonic battle of the ages cannot come soon enough.
