We at Broke Girl's Guide rarely (read: never) speak these words, but this is one weekend we'd rather spend in LA than just about anywhere else in the world. The reason takes place Friday night (read on...), but truly the entire weekend has been packed full of some really fun, interesting, diverse, and at times informative (see Saturday) events that we wouldn't miss for the world. (Unless Ryan Gosling was like, "Hey Girl, come anywhere with me," in which case we'd be out of here faster than you could say "Eva who?")
Friday
Start your Friday off with a little happy hour downtown at Blue Cow Kitchen -- nothing will make you forget the work week faster than some Country Fried Chicken Rolls and $5 beers. Once you've effectively erased the rantings of your nutjob boss from memory, make your way to the Dirty Dancing Dance-A-Long, a.k.a. the best event of all time, to get nostalgic in a good way. If you haven't had your fill of it by the end of Johnny's encore number, you might opt to go do a little more dancing -- or at least eyeballing trendy strangers with a bored expression on your face -- at SBE's newest club Blok afterward. Make sure you get in at a good table, and if all else fails you could always scream out, "Nobody puts baby in the corner!"
Saturday
It's much easier for us to get up for an exercise class if we've pre-paid for it, but it makes just as much sense to be sure not to miss them when they're completely free. On Saturday, start your morning off with a free poolside yoga lesson from instructor Tiffany Russo at the W Westwood. After, make your way to Clementine's for some breakfast before popping into the Annenberg Space for Photography to be one of the first to peep the "Who Shot Rock & Roll" exhibit. (While we're on the subject, you may want to RSVP now for one or two of KCRW's concerts in conjunction with the exhibit.) If amazing rock photography isn't your thing, but pole dancing is (we have a lot of guys we could set you up with...), grab brunch instead at Overland Cafe and then head to the International Pole Convention in Marina Del Rey to "perfect your balancing, spinning, flipping and dropping techniques in various workshops." Obviously.
Once you feel confident in your ability to make an extra dollar bill or two in case it ever comes to that, run to the first-ever summer sale at Fred Segal Santa Monica to find many, many ways in which to spend your stripper earnings in advance. If you don't do much damage at the sale, we will then permit you to spend $30 towards a French summer wine tasting, because let's face it -- you're not going to France anytime soon (wah, WAH).
Later, you'll have your pick of several outdoor film screenings, including The Big Lebowski at Eat See Hear, Ferris Bueller's Day Out at Oscars Outdoors, Chinatown at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and Avatar at Street Food Cinema. We suggest you choose wisely, as you could totally meet your future husband at one of these things (straight men often go to film screenings together on a Saturday night, right...?).
Sunday
Take in another free yoga lesson (+ high heels...?) on Sunday morning with Mary Ascension Saulnier. After, stick around to shop The Divorc?e Sale pop-up shop. Then, assuming you'll have worked up an appetite during that strange-and-painful-sounding workout, we suggest you swing by The Pikey to try out their new brunch menu, even if Curry on Toast with a Fried Duck Egg does sound a wee bit intense first thing on a Sunday morning.
Later, walk off your meal at LACMA, where the long-awaited Levitated Mass exhibit will open at last at 11 a.m. If you're somehow hungry again once you've walked through the show, stop by Currywurst to claim your free sausage. (At this point, we really hope you brought some Tums out with you!) Then, make your way downtown for a day spent perusing Dwell on Design, the West Coast's biggest design show. Later, grab dinner at Eat.Drink.Americano, where we also recommend you try out the generously-poured sangria. Then, head to the Devil's Night Drive-In with your sweetheart (or random guy you picked up at one of Saturday's shows) to catch a screening of Donnie Darko. It's no Dirty Dancing Dance-A-Long, but not every day can be the best day of your life, now can it?
