Middle School Baseball: Riverside reaches quarters, Kickmuit the semis

? After almost a week?s delay, the Riverside Middle School baseball team finally found out its opponent in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 state championship tournament.

Delayed twice by rain and interupted by inclement weather a third time, overall No. 1 seed Immaculate Conception of Cranston finally edged past 16th-seeded Portsmouth, 3-1, in the opening round.

The game was originally scheduled to take place on June 5, but was postponed to the following afternoon because of showers. The same flash storms forced the contest to postponed on Wednesday. The game was finally started on Thursday, but it, too, was suspended because of more rain. Finally, on Friday, June 8, Conception, which improved to 15-0 for the spring, was able to officially put Portsmouth aside.

The Vikings, likewise, had their first date on the road against eighth-seeded Westerly postponed by rain. The locals, though, were able to get their game in earlier in the week and shut out the host Bulldogs by a 6-0 count.

Captain and eighth-grader Adam Duarte was the winning pitcher, going five innings on the hill. He also helped his own cause by driving in four runs on three hits. Tyler Benedetti and Tim Faria each drove in a run with a double. Derek Silva added a RBI-single. The Vikings, seeded ninth, improved to 10-3 on the season.

Riverside travels to Cranston to face Conception Monday afternoon, June 11, at Calise Field at 3 p.m. The Vikings, who played in the East Division, did not face Immaculate Conception, winners of the Central Division, during the regular season. Vikings? co-head coaches Steve Checrallah and Rich Filippo got a glimpse of the opposition Thursday in the first part of their game against Portsmouth.

?They?re a good team, solid,? Checrallah said of Conception. ?I think we can beat them, but we?ve got to play at our best.?

The winner of the Riverside-Conception contest already knows who it face in the semifinals. Fourth-seeded Curtis Corner of South Kingstown defeated neighbor Narragansett, 5-3, in its opening round game then bettered Feinstein, 12-2, in the quarters. Curtis Corner would host Riverside or play Conception in Cranston in the semis tentatively set to take place Tuesday afternoon, June 12.

On the other side of the draw, Bristol-Warren?s Kickemuit advanced to semis after beating Ferri of Johnston, 2-0, and Cole of East Greenwich, 6-0. Lincoln and second-seeded North Cumberland vie for the spot opposite Kickemuit in their semi.

The state championship game is scheduled for Thursday, June 14, at McCarthy Field in West Warwick at a time to be determined.
