So with the root of hydroponic being hydro, you probably have figured out that this has something to do with water. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. Instead the plants are grown in a nutrient rich solution. In some cases the plants are grown in coconut husks, perlite, clay, or mineral wool. The hydroponic systems themselves are in a climate controlled environment and receive light from grow lamps.
There is nothing new under the sun, and that also goes for hydroponics. While you may believe that it is a modern development of this century, it was first written about in the 1600's. Some of the early fathers of this science include Francis Bacon, Julius von Sachs, and Wilhelm Knop.
So, what are the benefits anyway? You could easily go outside, plant some seeds, throw some water on them, and be done with it. Well, this may burst your bubble, but your plants will not be as big as those that are grown hydroponically, and you will not get the tremendous yield that you would with an indoor garden.
Other benefits include not having to deal with gardening soil, so that means less bugs for you to worry about. You also can reuse the water, so you also will not have to worry about a large jump on your water bill. As for the Earth itself, you will be using a hydroponic growing system, so you won't be polluting the environment with chemical fertilizers, and pesticides.
Another great thing about indoor gardening is you can garden in areas that are not normally suitable for growing certain plants, like the desert ,because you are not using soil.
Now, what do you need for an indoor hydroponic garden? A bathtub? Nope. It is a bit more complex than that. You will need a hydroponic system, water, grow lights, a device to control the climate, nutrients, fertilizers, fans, and a growing medium. Sometimes you may even need hydroponic pest control. As with anything else there is an array of helpful accessories that you can also use.
Some of the more popular plants that are grown are tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce. Of course there are many other types of plants that you can grow, but if you are not sure, please ask us first. We are here to help.
