Sinking the Titanic 'women and children first' myth

Forget "women and children first" ? it might have worked on the Titanic, but it's usually every man for himself, says Mikael Elinder

Where does the notion arise that, when a ship sinks, women and children come first?
It appears to have started when the HMS Birkenhead ran aground off South Africa in 1852, but the notion became widespread after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The captain explicitly issued an order for women and children to be saved first. As a result, the survival rate for women was three times higher than for men.

This idea of chivalry at sea has gained mythological status, but you're the first person to examine if it's true for many other maritime disasters. What did you find?
We went through a list of over 100 major maritime disasters spanning three centuries to see if we could find data on survival rates of men and women. We ended up with data on 18 shipwrecks, involving 15,000 passengers. In contrast to the Titanic, we found that the survival rate for men is basically double that for women. We only have data on children for a limited number of shipwrecks, but it is evident that they have really bad survival prospects: just 15 per cent.

What about the noble ideal that the captain and crew put the passengers first and go down with the ship?
What we can see clearly is that the crew were more likely to survive than passengers, with 61 per cent surviving, compared to around 37 per cent of male passengers. On average, the captain was more likely to survive than the passengers.

So this notion of chivalry at sea is a myth?
Yes. It really is every man for himself.

Why do you think we bought into the "women and children first" belief?
The Titanic has been so extensively studied and it confirmed the myth. There was little empirical evidence against it. Lucy Delap of Cambridge University argues that this myth was spread by the British elite to prevent women obtaining suffrage. They said, look at the Titanic, there is no reason to give women the vote because men, even when facing death, will put the interests of women first.

In fact, you've found that, in general, women fare worse on British ships?
Yes, It has been claimed that "women and children first" is just a British phenomenon. But we found a lower survival rate for women on British ships than on ships of other nations.

You are an economist. Why are you interested in shipwreck survival?
Other investigations of the Titanic disaster found that even when incentives to pursue your own interests were really high ? that you may die if you don't ? people can cooperate and act at the expense of their own survival. This is in contrast to models that economists have of human behaviour, that people are self-interested and act to maximise their own well-being. We wanted to test these models in extreme situations by analysing a completely new set of shipwrecks. We found that most shipwrecks are the complete opposite to what happened on the Titanic.

Mikael Elinder is an economist at Uppsala University, Sweden. His paper "Gender, social norms, and survival rates" is in PNAS this week

Egypt court move suspends constitution row

CAIRO (Reuters) - The struggle over Egypt's new constitution was temporarily suspended on Monday when a court deferred until late September the next step in a legal row that had threatened the dissolution of the body writing it.

The adjournment of a battle that has overshadowed one of the main components of Egypt's transition to democracy after the Arab Spring uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak could give the current constitutional assembly time to complete its work.

That would give a boost to Islamists, including the Muslim Brotherhood, who have a big say in the body, and also may stave off any move by the influential military to form a new assembly.

Plaintiffs opposed to what they see as the Islamists' overwhelming influence in the 100-person constitutional assembly had brought the case demanding the body be dissolved on the grounds it had been formed illegally.

Held earlier this month, the last session in the case led to both a courtroom brawl and a new lawsuit filed by the Islamists to demand the removal of the judge on the grounds he was biased. It is that case which a court adjourned until September 24, postponing further any discussion of the original case.

"It will be considered a sort of victory for the Muslim Brotherhood. It allows the assembly time to complete its task of returning a draft constitution," Mustapha Kamel Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University, said.

"I think this gives the assembly sufficient time."

RACE AGAINST TIME

Worried that the body could be dissolved, the constitutional assembly has been meeting daily in an apparent race against time. Their draft will define crucial questions such as the powers of the president and parliament and the role of the still-influential military establishment.

It also will set out the role of Islam in Egypt's system of government, a major area of concern for liberals. Their concerns have been amplified by the Brotherhood's success in the presidential election, won by Mohamed Mursi.

Abou Elela Mady, a politician who is a member of the body, said: "It is expected that the assembly will continue with success." Asked whether it would be able to finish its work by September 24, he told Reuters: "God willing, we will try".

The completion of the new constitution is a crucial milestone in a new transition to civilian rule as laid out in a decree issued by the military leadership on the eve of Mursi's election win. The decree states that completion of the new constitution is the precursor to new parliamentary elections, until when the military will exercise legislative power.

The Muslim Brotherhood-led parliament that emerged from the last legislative elections, held from November to February, was dissolved on grounds that the election rules were unconstitutional - a move disputed by the Islamists.

Though Monday's decision appears to clear the way for the constitutional assembly to continue its work, the body will likely face more challenges ahead: the generals have the right to oppose any of the articles in the new document.

And the case against the assembly is unlikely to disappear. One of the plaintiff's lawyers pledged to continue his battle.

Shahata Mohamed Shahata, one of the lawyers, said he would ask the judiciary to refer the entire case to a new court, undermining the Islamists' claim of bias on the part of the current judge. "We will continue," he told Reuters.

But Al-Sayyid, the Cairo University professor, said preserving the existing assembly could be in the interests of too many players, including the military council, which he said may struggle to form a new one were the body to be dissolved.

Nigeria bracing for broadband boom

Nigeria?s Minister of Communications Technology Omobola Johnson said that the country needs to seriously invest in correcting the country?s ubiquitous Internet capacity and national backbone, and it has become almost as important as having adequate water and transportation.

Nigeria?s Minister of Communications Technology Omobola Johnson (image: file)

?The emerging trend in Information Communications Technology (ICT) across the globe shows broadband penetration to be yet the unconquered territory in the sector especially in most of the developing countries, thus the need for aggressive handling, to boost efficiency in public safety, government and citizen interaction, education and healthcare provision, as well as the overall organisation and dissemination of knowledge,? she said during a presentation at the Nigerian Broadband Forum.

She added that there is a direct correlation between Internet penetration in a country and its Gross Domestic Product. ?Broadband and its universal access is becoming a significant indicator of development and competitiveness amongst nations. Empirical data tells us that every 10 per cent in access to broadband in every developing countries result in a commensurate 1.38 per cent increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).?

?These compelling statistics should provide the impetus to meet broadband demand, and if the demand is not there, create that demand. Nigeria prides itself on a telecoms revolution that catapulted us from 400,000 subscribers to over 90 million subscribers today,? she said.

She went on to say that the country will do everything in its power to promote the development of broadband in Nigeria. ?We must deplore every strategy and essential ingredient used to achieve the success story of the penetration of mobile telephony as in the case of the delivery of broadband services in Nigeria?.

Last week Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Eugene Juwah said that it is worrying that Internet penetration is low in the country.

?Broadband penetration is estimated to be less than 2 per cent in Nigeria, while the average broadband penetration in Africa is estimated at about 4 per cent; this is worrisome if the country is to be among the knowledge economy by 2020. Thus, the commission hopes to make a regulatory to take technology to the larger segment of the Nigerian society by creating environment and incentives for private sector participation

Find Bastrop Foreclosures ? Business | Raw Business Law

Picture_003.jpg

If you are looking for Bastrop foreclosures in this area of Texas, you can find them right online. This is where you will find all of the listings for foreclosure properties including Del Valle foreclosures as well. When you are looking for property, the best way to get a good deal is to look for foreclosures. These are properties that have been taken over by the bank because someone has defaulted on their mortgage. As there are more homes on the market than there are buyers, now is the perfect time for buyers to get a bargain in the state of Texas when it comes to real estate, especially if they are looking in the foreclosure markets such as the Bastrop foreclosures or the Del Valle foreclosures.

There are many different properties that you can get when you are seeking out Bastrop foreclosures or Del Valle foreclosures. You can opt for single family homes or multi family homes as well as vacant properties, rental properties and even commercial real estate. Some of the foreclosure listings need work and most are sold as is. Before you set out to buy Del Valle foreclosures or Bastrop foreclosures, you need to figure out how much you have to spend and get any financing together.

You go through a realtor when you are buying Bastrop foreclosures or Del Valle foreclosures just as you would if you were buying property in any other way. However, because these properties are sold as is, it is a good idea to get an inspection done prior to putting in an offer for the house. Due diligence such as getting a title commitment for the property should be done at the time as well to make sure that there are no problems with the title. This is standard practice when buying any type of real estate but is usually done beforehand when buying foreclosure properties.

Going online and looking for Bastrop foreclosures as well as Del Valle foreclosures is easy. In addition to these, when you go onto a website that lists the foreclosure properties in Texas, you can do a search for the properties based on price, type of home that you are looking for and the area where you are seeking the home. You will then be able to pull up all of the Del Valle foreclosures or Bastrop foreclosures that are in your price range as well as are the type of property that you are looking for.

Once you find the Bastrop foreclosures or Del Valle foreclosures that interest you, you can contact the real estate agent and make an appointment to see the properties. They will take you through the properties at which time you can then decide if you want to place an offer. Placing an offer on the Bastrop foreclosures or Del Valle foreclosures is done through a real estate agency and then is presented to the bank for approval. If you are ready to close and have the money as well as make a reasonable offer, chances are that you will be able to purchase a home of your own in Bastrop or Del Valle.

Mantras For Vashikaran

By: tirloki

There is great emphasis on the fact that the Vashikaran should be kept confidential. If this science has got usefulness, it should be popularized and propagated. Everywhere, every person should have its knowledge. But this is not the case. What is the reason behind it?
The real vashikaran and secrets were passed on verbally by the competent Guru his disciples only. The disciples memorized that science and also got realization of Siddhi but the Guru got his disciples to promise that his knowledge would be granted to only those who really deserved it. So they had this relevant argument behind their secrecy. If a suspicious, weak and fearful person start Vashikaran Sadhna and leaves it midway due to experiencing some distress or crisis puts himself in danger because as at that moment the inner energy of the aspirant is feeble so is easily overpowered by the external forces.
This reason why only a competent Guru is capable imparts the knowledge of Vashikaran. A Guru minutely and completely analyses the disciples and on getting assured that his disciple would never misused that power, he starts teaching Vashikaran Sadhna . Immediately after getting success, the aspirant become very much energetic and his vigorous activities must be utilized for public welfare as well as for self-realization and not causing harm to other.
Perusal of the past reveals that some Tantriks started the misused of Vashikaran and thus got introduced vile practices. These false Tantriks not just misused this rather expounded that without vile practices success is impossible in field of vashikaran. It was then but natural for the common man to keep distance from such practicers who were unfortunately more in number than real master of Vashikaran. Soon society began to shun Vashikaran and a belief was generated that vashikaran itself is a vile practice and has no useful applications in life.
But the problem was not with Vashikaran rather with the charlatans who used vashikaran as an excuse to give vent to their beastly cravings. In fact Vashikaran is a science that can instill totality in life. When the left wing of vashikaran got predominant and those, who were keen to do these leftist Sadhnas for their petty and selfish ends, did not get success, there turned into big critics of Vasshikaran and only those persons created misconceptions about Vashikaran.
The notion of an ordinary person about Vashikaran are not worthy to mention as this science of power has been misused very much. Those who are quite conversant with Vashikaran , by awakening their internal cosmic faculties, acquire knowledge to progress ahead and by activating the internal chakras become ultimately successful in attaining self-realizattion.

Getting Low Price Seo Companies Via Enterprise Course of Outsourcing Companies

The process of optimizing websites is an important aspect for the success of an online business. This is because of the fact that a brand that does most of its business on the internet is reliant on their website to draw potential customers.

An internet site that is not search engine optimized can?t get the publicity and visibility to herald the high volume web traffic wanted to sustain the business operations. That is why search engine marketing has change into an important part of any on-line business and is the primary factor why a lot of the corporations have outsourced low price web optimization companies to different countries.

The job of an search engine optimisation specialist can be very difficult for somebody who just isn?t aware of the process. There are many expertise that must be acquired before the person can be considered an search engine optimisation specialist. This is because the search engine optimisation skilled must faucet into both the technical and theoretical features of the search engine to get the location to work on the optimum level.

Among the many expertise that website positioning specialists must grasp are keyword research, hyperlink constructing, web site analysis, guide marking, blog creation, article advertising and many more. The task of search engine marketing will involve the positioning being optimized all of the time. Once the process of search engine optimisation has started on an internet site, the result may be seen in a very quick time. That is normally evidenced in greater web traffic to the location as compared to before the optimization process.

With the rising demand for such providers, corporations have outsourced the service to different companies and countries. An organization that is on the lookout for low value search engine optimization services can have plenty of selections in as we speak`s market. What has began out as a specialised area of interest in web advertising has grown to a full-fledged trade by itself. These days many business process outsourcing (BPO) corporations offer low price website positioning services as part of their solutions. This allows the enterprise owner to work with only one provider for all outsourcing activities. Furthermore, the enterprise owner can have the flexibleness to customise the companies wanted from the BPO firm so that they?ll get better worth for their money.

Employing the companies of an outsourcing firm is a good transfer for many businesses, whether or not conventional or online, as a result of it?s a price efficient tactic to get the duty executed without having to spend a fortune. These BPO companies can afford to offer low value services to their purchasers because they have a pool of talented freelancers who are based in various international locations where the wages are low.

(AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

Kofi Annan, who brokered the agreement, expressed concern Saturday about the weapons buildup in Aleppo. "I remind the parties to the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law, and urge them to exercise restraint and avoid any further bloodshed."

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said their thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

How To Make Big Changes With Home Improvement | Luxury Home ...

A belief system called Feng Shui suggests that if you rearrange your furniture, the alignment of the room?s spiritual forces will change. A lot of people think that if you clear the doorway you will gain money. Read on to learn more about improving your home using the ancient Chinese art of feng shui.

It is important to thoroughly dust your home weekly. Lots of dust can gather in a small period of time, causing allergens to accumulate. By dusting you will remove those allergens as well those pests such as spiders or ants.

Small rooms are often gloomy, but you can change that! Give the room a little light. Shine your windows and raise the blinds. Once you let the light shine through, you will be shocked at just how large a little room can appear. Avoid clutter, and use muted colors on the walls. Suddenly, your small room will seem to expand.

When undertaking a substantial home improvement project, a contractor should know what your budget will allow. If your contractor knows how much money is available, he will be able to plan materials purchases better. Your contractor will also benefit, because they can leave themselves room for profit. This allows you to get the most bang for your buck through your purchase.

Investing in proper insulation will pay off very well over time. Homes tend to be under insulated, especially old ones. Extra insulation in your crawl space or attic can reduce the amount you spend on heating and cooling bills for many years to come.

Consider a heavy-duty fence if you live near a wooded area. Doing this will keep wild animals, including coyotes, rabbits and skunks, from entering the yard. This is especially important if you intend to have a garden in your yard.

In home improvement projects, you need to dedicate a certain space in your yard for the debris that results from the project. Planning in advance what you are going to do with rubbish can save you time and money during the construction.

It is better to think of home improvement as a wise investment rather than an expense. With new appliances, you will save on electricity. Reduce your home?s energy consumption by making any necessary home repairs and upgrading the insulation. Careful planning can help in the long run.

When thinking about the colors in a room, obey the 60/30/10 rule. Simply put, 60% of the color used should dominant, 30% secondary, and 10% accent. Now you?re left with many different options to explore, like how colors contrast, and whether you want a dark or light as your dominant color, etc. Your options are limitless.

It is possible to update the appearance of your refrigerator and other appliances without spending a bundle. Is the style of your otherwise amazing refrigerator annoying you because stainless steel is where it is at? The paint is relatively affordable and easy to use. You can change the entire feel of the kitchen in the span of a day.

Do you want to add some sophistication to your home but are low on funds? A really good way to improve the look of your home is replacing your old door bell with an elegant one. Anyone ringing the bell at your house will get an instant sense of who lives there.

As mentioned, feng shui is thought by many to be a powerful way to organize your furniture to increase your home?s good fortune. Apply what you?ve just learned, and get started on your next project today.

These centres or rehab clinics provide services to all and sundry and aim to permanently curb the problem of addiction. There are many medications that can be prescribed to help for substance abuse. These medications usually work by mimicking the action of the drug in the body. In spite of all this the treatment process is usually very painful and the individual getting treated has to go through a harrowing time. U.S. fears Syria preparing for massacre in Aleppo

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's forces renewed a ground and aerial bombardment of Aleppo on Friday, extending efforts to crush rebels in Syria's commercial capital in what the United States said it feared could become a massacre.

Insurgents targeted army roadblocks and security installations, with both sides avoiding close-quarters warfare in the city of 2.5 million people, Syria's biggest urban centre.

The U.S. State Department said credible reports of tank columns moving on Aleppo, along with air strikes by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, represented a serious escalation of Assad's efforts to crush a rebellion that began 16 months ago.

"This is the concern: that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Troops stationed on the outskirts of Aleppo unleashed barrages of heavy-caliber mortar rounds on the western neighborhoods of Saladin, al-Sukkari and al-Fardos, while Russian MI-25 helicopter gunships struck al-Sakhour in the east with rockets, several opposition activists in the city said.

RISING CASUALTIES

In the first reported casualty on Friday, a man of about 60 wearing a traditional white prayer outfit was killed near a park in Saladin. His body was placed in a mosque pending identification.

Thirty-four people were killed in Aleppo and its environs on Thursday, according to opposition activists keeping a tally of casualties in the northern city.

"The rebels have so far been nimble, and civilians have mostly been the victims of the bombardment," said activist Abu Mohammad al-Halabi, speaking by phone from the city.

"There is lots of internal displacement, and schools have been turned to makeshift shelters that are packed. One shell hitting a school will result in a catastrophe," he said.

"The regime is massing troops and tanks at the entrances of Aleppo, but it seems it is for now content with bombarding the city, with the rebels constantly on the move."

Majed al-Nour, another activist, said rebels attacked a security outpost in the neighborhood of Bustan al-Joz, which is close to the Aleppo city center, on Thursday.

"The rebels are present in the east and west of the city, and have a foothold in areas of the center. The regime forces control the entrances of Aleppo and the main thoroughfares and commercial streets and are bombarding the residential districts that fell into rebel hands," he said.

Nour said tens of thousands of people had fled Aleppo to nearby northern rural regions close to Turkey from which the Syrian army has withdrawn in recent weeks to focus on urban areas where relatively lightly armed rebels have hunkered down.

The heavy fighting around Aleppo follows an audacious bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus on July 18 and led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

With U.N. Security Council resolutions for sanctions against Syria vetoed by Russia and China for a third time last week, the United States has said it is stepping up assistance to Syria's fractured opposition, although it remains limited to non-lethal supplies such as communications gear and medical equipment.

Reuters has learned that the White House has crafted a presidential directive, called a "finding," that would authorize greater covert assistance for the rebels, while still stopping short of arming them.

It is not clear whether President Barack Obama has signed the document, and U.S. officials declined to comment on the finding, which is a highly classified authorization for covert activity.

UNITING THE OPPOSITION

A Syrian parliamentarian representing the northern province of Aleppo said on Friday she had defected to Turkey, becoming the first member of the rubberstamp assembly elected in May and dominated by President Bashar al-Assad's Baath Party to defect.

"I have crossed to Turkey and defected from this tyrannical regime ... because of the repression and savage torture against a nation demanding the minimum of rights," Ikhlas al-Badawi told Sky News Arabia.

One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, put himself forward on Thursday as someone who could help unify the opposition inside and outside Syria on a plan for a transfer of power.

Tlas, speaking in a newspaper interview in the Saudi city of Jeddah, also said he was looking for support from Saudi Arabia and other powers. "I am discussing with ... people outside Syria to reach a consensus with those inside," Tlas told Thursday's edition of the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.

Tlas went on to Turkey and met with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Turkey, a former ally of Assad and now one of his fiercest critics, has a heavy strategic stake in shaping any post-Assad leadership in neighboring Syria.

Tlas appeared briefly with Davutoglu at an official guest house, but made no statement.

Turkey closed its border posts with Syria on Wednesday to all traffic except Syrian refugees.

Russia, one of the few remaining allies of the authoritarian Assad whose family has run Syria for 42 years, said calls for him to quit power were hindering efforts to end the conflict.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said such calls, led by the United States, Turkey and other Western and Arab nations, were fanning violence. He reiterated Moscow's contention that support for Syrian rebel groups was tantamount to backing terrorism.

Iran promised to stand by Syria, come what may.

First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi told Iran's Press TV on Thursday that the Islamic Republic's support for Syria, its main Arab ally, was "unchangeable", countering suggestions that Iran could soften its backing for Assad.

Demarquette luxury chocolates included in Great Taste Top 50 ...

We are very proud that our Imperial China chocolate has been named as one of the Top 50 Foods within the UK. The list was drawn up as part of the Guild of Fine Food?s annual Great Taste accreditation scheme, which saw 8,807 food and drink products blind-tasted and whittled down over the course of 45 days by 350 experts.Demarquette included in Top 50 Foods in Britain

The top 50 food and drink products were chosen from the 123 entries that had gained a coveted 3-star gold and each one has now been nominated for a Golden Fork Award, the highest accolade in fine food and drink which will be announced at the Awards? dinner at London?s Royal Garden Hotel this September.

Judges this year included Masterchef winner and restaurateur Mat Follas, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge Charles Campion, food writers Lucas Hollweg and Xanthe Clay and over 300 food buyers from leading food halls, delicatessens and farm shops, including Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.

Guild of Fine Food chairman Bob Farrand said that each of the food and drink products entered into Great Taste undergoes the most rigorous scrutiny.

?To achieve a 3-star grading involves at least 25 experts unanimously agreeing that the product tastes divine,? he said. ?But to be included in the Top 50 Foods in Britain meant each one had to satisfy the discerning palates of a further 25 dedicated foodies. These products all deliver the most extraordinary taste.?Imperial China Luxury Chocolates by Demarquette

HTC explains decision to drop Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich update

Android Central

After a little confusion earlier this month, it was eventually revealed that HTC wouldn't be updating the venerable Desire HD to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich after all. At the time, the manufacturer simply said that the current Gingerbread-based firmware "provides customers with the best experience" on the phone. Now HTC has elaborated a little on the specific technical issues keeping the DHD from getting an Android 4.0 update. Basically, the system partition of the phone isn't large enough to hold Sense and Ice Cream Sandwich, and HTC found the device's performance on ICS to be below-par anyway.

Here's the company's statement in full, which goes into a fair amount of detail about what's involved --

We’ve heard your feedback on our decision not to update the HTC Desire HD to Android 4.0. We completely understand that this is a controversial decision.

For more background, due to how storage on the HTC Desire HD is partitioned – and the larger size of Android 4.0 – it would require re-partitioning device storage and overwriting user data in order to install this update. While technically advanced users might find this solution acceptable, the majority of customers would not. We also considered ways to reduce the overall size of the software package, but this would impact features and functionality that customers are currently using. Even after installing the update, there were other technical limitations which we felt negatively impacted the user experience.

We believe an update should always improve the user experience and carefully evaluate each update based on this criteria. While we are very aware of the disappointment from this decision, we believe the impact to user experience was too great. We recognize this is a change from our previous statement and for that we’re truly sorry.

So that's that. Clearly there's no way HTC could have anticipated the hardware or partitioning requirements of ICS when designing the Desire HD in mid-2010, so it's the decision to cut the update is an understandable one. Nevertheless, we're sure custom ROM developers will still find a way to get ICS ROMs loaded onto the Desire HD's smaller partition setup. So if you're still rocking a DHD, the custom ROM route should still be open to you.

Almond

The folks at Securifi are banking on the touch trend, unveiling the first touch- enabled wireless router, the Almond ($79 street). The Almond's touch interface is reminiscent of Microsoft's Windows 8 Metro interface because Almond too, has colorful tiles. Decent throughput, easy touch screen setup, plus the ability to operate Almond as a wireless extender, are all good reasons to consider this affordable Wi-Fi router. On the other hand, it lacks 5 GHz connectivity and has only two 10/100 Ethernet LAN ports. More worrisome: during testing, the touchscreen froze on me. I had to reboot the router to re-enable touch. Touch is compelling, but you may not want to give the heart of your network yet another reason it might need a restart.

Specs
Securify's Almond is a small device, measuring about 4.5 by 4.75 by 1.5 inches (HWD). The router is built to operate vertically. A large portion of the front of the housing is dedicated to the 320 by 240 pixel, 2.8-inch color touchscreen. I suppose you could operate Almond vertically, but the casing is slightly curved and the touchscreen's orientation does not change if you position the router horizontally.

The 2x2 MIMO antenna hardware provides up to 300 Mbps throughput at 2.4 GHz. The hardware is not the latest in the Wi-Fi market, but it's sufficient for connecting legacy 802.11b/g devices as well as 802.11n clients. The vendor's specs state the device can support up to 50 concurrent connections. While I didn't stress it to that extent in my testing, I did leave it running for three days straight, and the router stayed extremely cool the entire time.

There's a small stylus tucked away at the base of the router for more precise touch when selecting menu options. Since Almond and its screen are relatively small, those with less-than-slender fingers may find the stylus easier to work with.

Touch-Enabled Setup
Using a touch screen to set up a Wi-Fi router was, I have to admit, sort of fun. More importantly, the Almond's set up was quite easy.

Getting your Almond started is a matter of powering up Almond and then following simple, on-screen instructions. In a matter of minutes I had Almond configured as a wireless router. The device set up its own default SSID and passphrase (you can change both).

Menu options are on the Metro-like tiles and include, "Internet," "Security," "Wireless," "Range extender," "Help," and "More." Touching these tiles allows you to see or edit the router's configuration. Configuration options are very basic, for example, opening the "Wireless" tile lets you change the SSID or password and enable a guest network.? "Security" gives you the choice of changing the encryption level?it's WPA/WPA2 by default?or enabling a screen lock that can be unlocked with a password. You can also change the router's administrator password from the touchscreen.

Users can also view information such as device status, system log, and add devices. There are two options for adding devices; you can touch the "Add" tile, which simply displays the SSID and password needed for manually connecting other devices or you can touch the "WPS" tile/menu option on screen. There's no physical WPS button on the housing as there is on most routers, but you can press WPS and the router gives you three minutes to connect a client via that client's WPS button.

The only problem with having WPS within the touch interface rather than the screen, is if you accidentally touch the WPS tile and want to cancel there's no way to do so, you are stuck on that screen for three minutes. If you accidentally press an external WPS button on a typical router, of course, that does not interfere with you continuing to work in the management interface.

Touch Trouble
One issue I had in testing was that the touchscreen froze on me at one point. There was nothing to do accept reboot the device to resolve this problem.

Some features are more useful than others. "Connection" for instance gives you very light, basic network mapping as it graphically depicts your network connections. A really handy feature is the ability to update firmware with just a touch. After touching the "Firmware" tile, the screen indicated that a firmware update was available.? At a touch, Almond downloaded and applied the firmware? a far easier and more elegant process than most other routers provide for updating firmware.

You don?t have the option of setting any granular wireless settings with Almond, but it's targeted for users who probably wouldn't be interested in tweaking advanced settings (for more on tweaking routers, take a look at "10 Wireless Router Features You Should Be Using but Aren't") such as Frame Burst.

Oddly, within the wireless settings is an option to set the network to 5 GHz. Knowing the specs stated this is a 2.4 GHz-only router, I asked the Securifi team why this option was present. I was told this is a bug and there will be a firmware upgrade coming to fix it soon. It does make me wonder if the 5 GHz in the menu might indicate a dual-band version of Almond in the near future?

Fortunately, you aren't limited to the touch interface in case you aren't near the router, or there's an issue with the touch screen because Almond also has a web interface. It's got that same Metro-like UI as the touch screen's display. You can do a little bit more management in the web interface, for example, this is where you can change the wireless mode from Mixed to 802.11n-only.

Performance
For a 2x2 router, performance is decent, even on par with some 3x3 300 Mbps dual-bands I've tested. In 2.4GHz Mixed mode, throughput averaged about 55 Mbps. That speed did not get much of a bump when I switched into N-only mode; at the same distance I received 57 Mbps throughput. Here are charts comparing Almond in both modes to other single-band routers tested:

Novel Networking Device
Let's cut right to the chase; you aren't going to want to use Almond as a router for high-definition video streaming or for a network that has heavy gaming, or VoIP traffic.

There's no QoS and no 5 GHz band. What Almond provides is an easy way to setup a wireless router for Facebooking, chatting, emailing and your garden-variety Internet activity. I would consider Almond appropriate for my Dad, because he doesn't need an intense, expensive dual-band.

Almond is not available on the market just yet, but the Securifi website states, "Coming soon." The attractive interface and touch display is bound to draw tech neophiles looking for the latest, shiny gadget. And Almond looks more like a gadget than a router, making it more attractive than the typical router. Even better, for light Internet needs, it's got decent performance. I am a bit cautious about the touch screen freeze, and even though this is designed for those with light throughput needs, there ought to be at least Gigabit on the two LAN ports.? You can also get a router with similar or even better specs for about $30-40 online. Although the only pricing information available on Almond so far is "below $70," if the company prices the router not much lower than $70 keep in mind, you are paying a little extra for the touch screen. At the moment, Amazon lists Almond for $79, which seems a bit high.

Securifi tells me that a new firmware is due in August. The firmware is going to include Weather and Photo Viewing apps. That update is going to make Almond even more gadget-like. It's a novel approach to wireless networking and aside from a few concerns mentioned, it's not a bad single-band router, earning three out of five stars.

YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN A UNIQUE HOME AT THE JOHN GORRIE A CONDOMINIUM

Posted by Carol A. Hill, Senior VP, Operations on Thu, Jul 26, 2012

The John Gorrie a condominium, one of Jacksonville?s premier condo communities, offers homebuyers a diverse array of beautifully appointed homes in meticulously restored historic school buildings. The condominium community also offers a unique, local-centric lifestyle for residents who enjoy cultural ambience with modern conveniences.

describe the image?I like that I live in a building that is unique to everything around it,? said homebuyer John Hoffman, who recently purchased one of the 68 residences that comprise The John Gorrie. ?All too often, people end up buying the home that looks exactly like their neighbors, with no personal style or appeal.?

There are plenty of options for homebuyers at The John Gorrie, where available homes include studios, one- and two-bedroom condominiums, and two-story townhomes ranging in size from 800 square feet to 1,800 square feet and priced from the low $100,000s. The diversity of floor plans and pricing was one of the draws for Hoffman, who chose his home specifically for its size and affordability. His one-bedroom, one-bathroom flat features the original hardwood floors from a classroom and eight-foot windows that overlook the majestic oak trees adorning the school?s landscape.

Great lengths were taken to modernize the buildings to today?s housing standards. Residents enjoy contemporary amenities including a custom-designed fitness center, elevators, private gated parking and a resident reading room featuring Wi-Fi internet access. The restored original private courtyard provides residents with a tranquil outdoor gathering space. Modern luxuries in all residences include stainless steel GE appliances, CaesarStone countertops, gourmet kitchens and pedestal sinks in bathrooms.describe the image

Located at 2525 College Street, residents are within walking distance of cozy neighborhood restaurants, local boutiques and charming storefronts. Residents also enjoy close proximity to the banks of the St. Johns River, oak-canopied streets and a sampling of the area?s most marvelously maintained parks. The community is minutes from downtown Jacksonville, cultural landmarks such as The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and national sporting venues.
