AVIVA STADIUM REPORT: July, 2011

The IABA/DCC Boxing in the Community Officers recently collaborated with the management company in the Aviva Stadium, including Stadium Director Martin Murphy, Deputy Operations Manager Frank Maguire and FAI CEO John Delaney. We met and agreed on a fantastic opportunity, which would optimise the use of this fantastic new arena; whilst at the same time, entertaining, educating and most importantly, positively influencing communities in Dublin?s inner city ? ALL FREE OF CHARGE! From a boxing perspective, the introduction of young people to our sport was of major concern.

The ?brain-storming session? commenced and both parties came up with some good ideas. The Aviva Stadium offered us the Garda Conference Room as our base, located inside the stadium, at the Landsdowne Lane entrance and they granted us full-use of the room, allowing us the authority to design it how we felt would further-enhance our programmes, throughout the whole month of July.

Initially, we sent out information packets to all the youth clubs, summer projects, and recreation centres within the confines of inner-city Dublin, to tell them our ideas and to take bookings for our programme, in 3 x 2 hr sessions, for the month of July. We then sat down and designed our Aviva Stadium Tour/Start-Box/Exhibition Programme and came up with a four-fold strategy, which entailed the following:-

1) THE AVIVA STADIUM TOUR:

First of all, the boxing officers, who included, Oisin Fagan, Michael Carruth, Paul Quinn, Thomas Ahern and Eric Donovan, attended a special tour of the Aviva Stadium held by the Chief Tour-Guide, where we asked questions and took notes about the predominant details of how the stadium was formed and how it was run.

This whole process, of course, was initialised by the demolition of the old Landsdowne Road and reconstructed to the all new, ?grade one? arena, known as The Aviva Stadium. The information was vast and the tour included a trip to the Media Centre, where the journalists would assemble before the game and prior to entering the auditorium for press conferences. This auditorium was one of our stops as ?new tour-guides?, where we took our groups to watch a 12-minute DVD, accompanied by some powerful music; all encompassing, the demolition-footage of a ailing, old-fashioned Landsdowne Road grounds, yet climaxing, with the bright, new Aviva Stadium, (which aptly means ?spring time? or?young grain?; which ironically, symbolises rejuvenationwithin this stadium).

Then the tour continued to the players entrance, dressing-rooms and shower/hydrotherapy/plunge-pool areas, before heading out pitch side to sit in the home-side?s dug-outs, where the Irish rugby and soccer managers, subs and greater entourage, would sit during the games.

The main Aviva Stadium Tour finished with a trip to the 5^th level, where the groups could get a birds-eye view of the fantastic arena.

Our programme didn?t finish there however, and we continued to the Garda Conference Room where we had assembled our gym.

2) STARTBOX PROGRAMME:

As boxing officers, our predominant goals throughout our summer-schedule, was to reach out to ?at-risk? children and young people, not to mention, disadvantaged communities in general, by giving them an interest in the sport of boxing and promoting healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, in contemporary times, it has been proven that being involved in boxing, establishes a positive-focus in participant?s lives. So, we were banking on the possibility that the students would recognise the benefits that come from our great sport and they?d hopefully acquire such an interest that they would be confident enough to find a local boxing club and begin their own journey down the road, as amateur boxers. Therefore, when the Aviva Stadium, gave us full-reign over the Garda Conference Room, this gave us the perfect opportunity to design a gym, along the same lines as the High Performance Gym at the National Stadium, Dublin.

We had the gym all-decked-out with heavy bags, ropes, and even erected a full-sized ring, which was not only aesthetically pleasing and a great visual effect, but it definitely inspired and motivated these young people. We brought our groups in and warmed them up in the ring. Then we split them into manageable groups, where some of us would take the participants on pads inside the ring, some went on the bags and the remainder on the ropes and we rotated, so that everyone could get a taste of all the stations required. The students seemed to find these activities extremely enjoyable and we found that it definitely whet their appetites for the sport of boxing.

3) IABA 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION:

In honour of our fantastic history as a boxing nation, we hunted down some of our boxing heroes, both past and present, to ask them if they would donate their medals, trophies, belts and cups to go on show at the IABA Exhibition. Most of the boxers were only delighted to comply, so in the exhibition, we were excited to be able to show the young people on the tour, the 5-medals won in last year?s European Championships, just for starters. Not only that, but incredibly, on one of the days, all the medal-winners from the RTE/Irish Sports Council ?Irish Team of the Year 2010?.Including Kenneth Egan, Tyrone McCullough, Darren O Neill, Paddy Barnes and our very own Eric Donovan, attended our exhibition, to the delight of the young people who took the tour.

We were also graced with a variety of National perpetual cups and trophies, as well as a number of national and international belts. However, by far the highlight of the exhibition was still to come, where Michael Carruth allowed his Olympic Gold Medal and Belt, which he?d won in the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona, to be displayed, for everyone to see. The young people were in awe of all the gold, silver and bronze on show and had great fun listening to all the old boxing-stories of how the champions had won their titles and medals. It also gave them the rare chance of trying on the various belts and medals, for a myriad of photo opportunities.

4) MEDIA DISPLAY:

Also, within the confines of the Garda Conference Room and along the walls of the gym, Aideen O Connor of the DCC kindly printed out hundreds of poster-sized photographs and helped erect them on the walls. The posters included many of our heroes in action, both past and present. We also had the use of 3 televisions, where we screened the motivational video, pertaining to the Irish boxing team training in Milan- all accompanied with some up-beat music. This too, went down extremely well with the participants.

5) CONCLUSION/FACTS

We spent from Tuesday 5^th to Friday 29^th July 2011 (excluding Wednesday 27^th July) at the Aviva Stadium.

In all, we worked with at total of 72 groups; including, youth diversion projects, training employment centres, early school leavers, summer projects, autistic groups, the deaf society, youth projects, recreation centres, boxing clubs, and accompanied by DCC Sport & Recreation Officers special needs

groups and senior citizens.

We dealt with young people of all shapes and sizes, of mixed gender, race, ethnicity, religion, ability and age.

Our target area consisted of all Dublin City Council city locations.

Our target group included participants between the ages of 10-21.

The final tally of participants, which the IABA/DCC Boxing in the Community Development Officers worked with, over the space of a total of just 18 days at the Aviva Stadium, came to a grand total of 1040 young people, 76 senior citizens, and 23 special needs participants.

Not surprisingly, the Aviva Stadium Tour/StartBox Exhibition Programme has indeed been deemed a huge success, not only by the participant?s themselves, but very positive feedback? has been received, in the form of? letters, texts and other multi-media outlets, from dignitaries, group leaders, managers and social workers alike.

We would like to thank Aideen O Connor, John Delaney, Martin Murphy, Frank Maguire and all of the staff at the Aviva Stadium for embracing this project and recognising its value to local community. Martin and Frank have even suggested the possibility of further collaborations in the stadium. Over-all, this was a fantastic experience for both ourselves and the participants.

Consequently, with the help of the Aviva Stadium it is a programme that the boxing officers will seriously have to think about revisiting with a view to targeting our school groups at a later date.

A glimpse behind closed laboratory doors

"Get your protective suit on, take these gloves. Now get in there and hunt for body parts."

I scrambled to obey the clipboard-holding official who greeted me in the garden of London's Natural History Museum, then plunged into the crime scene, clumsy, nervous and inexperienced.

I need not have worried overly much. The "body parts" were bits of meat planted in the undergrowth by NHM forensic entomologists earlier in the day, along with grubs bought from a local bait shop.

This was all in aid of Science Uncovered, the museum's contribution to Researcher's Night, a European Union endeavour to show the public what science research is going on behind closed laboratory doors. Around 800 venues took part in 320 cities across Europe.

The idea behind the larva-foraging exercise was to give us an unforgettable insight into the work of the NHM's forensic entomology team, who use fly larvae and pupae to date corpses. It worked. I am unlikely to forget that maggots are most likely to be found in the head and ano-genital area of corpses - a fact graphically illustrated by a thermally imaged photograph passed round by forensic sleuth, Martin Hall.

Hall also regaled us with tales of cases where entomology has brought killers to justice, such as the Liverpudlian man who was convicted because some old pupae cases were found in a?dried-up water tank in his attic. The police became suspicious because the fly species they belonged to usually lays eggs in dead bodies. Further investigation found traces of the breakdown products of cocaine, confirming that the corpse would have been human: in Hall's words, "it wasn't likely to be a drug-taking pigeon". When confronted with the evidence, the man confessed to murdering a drug user who was known to be missing.

The Crime Scene Live event was only one of many activities on at the NHM on Friday night. The halls were packed with people interacting with scientists, be it sorting through trays of insects or using a pneumatic pen to extract a bit of "maybe dinosaur" bone from some sedimentary rock ("It's definitely not sheep," said Head of Conservation Chris Collins when pressed on its provenance).

The museum's restaurant was also filled to bursting for The Science Bar, where you got the opportunity to have a drink with real-life researchers. I ended up with Alex Monro of the Botany Department, who enthralled me with talk of his research into Chinese cave nettles. About four months back one of my clients consulted me on how best they could boost online sales on their ecommerce website for a big-ticket, much awaited electronic gadget. When the customer searches for the product, both ecommerce sites are listed and both are more or less identically ranked. So obviously, to attract the customer?s attention, the search results needed to display something that would help catch the prospective customer?s eye and induce him to visit my client?s website. The battle for online sales therefore, begins even before the customer reaches your ecommerce website.

I conducted an audit of my client?s website content and determined that if the new product is to catch the prospective customer?s attention, then product specific keywords were going to be required. Also, the product description needed to be different and unique. For this, I recommended the Ecommerce internet marketing services of a sales copywriter who specializes in creating unique content that induces the customer to click on the ?buy? button.

Each page on my client?s ecommerce site dealing with the new product was therefore re-written to be not only unique and attractive by Facebook marketing campaign, but also contain targeted keywords. The keywords themselves were selected after an exhaustive study of search patterns and keywords used by target customers. While at it I also recommended some minor alternations to the site navigation so that the customers could quickly find the products and information they were looking for.

Apart from the above changes, I also created a new blog and forum section. The blog section added further content to the site and the forum section enabled the customers to discuss product related issues and exchange notes on product apps and so on i.e. more content.

Results

In less than a month all the major search engines had picked up the new content. Based on the results and the way it was generating online traffic, I further fine-tuned the content and navigation of the ecommerce site.

With less than 40 days to go before product launch, my client?s ecommerce website was already generating far more traffic than his nearest rivals. At this stage we introduced pre-booking online sales campaign, Online marketing consulting and corporate identity branding that offered a whole bunch of free goodies. More online traffic, more hits and we were generating online sales even before the actual product launch date. That?s exactly what you want isn?t it?

Iran Hikers Release: Jailed Americans Shane Bauer, Josh Fattal Will Be Freed On Wednesday, Lawyer Masoud Shafiei Says

TEHRAN, Iran -- Two Americans jailed as spies in Iran will be released on Wednesday, their lawyer said, after the court approved a $1 million bail-for-freedom deal that cleared the way for the release of the men after more than two years in custody.

The Iranian attorney for the two, Masoud Shafiei, said he planned to go to Tehran's Evin prison to begin the procedure for the release of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal.

"The case is over," Shafiei said. "The court has ordered that they be freed on bail."

They were arrested along the Iran-Iraq border in July 2009 and sentenced last month to eight years each in prison. A third American in the group, Sarah Shourd, was freed last year on bail.

Shafiei said he would meet the two Americans at 3:00 p.m. at Tehran's notorious Evin prison.

They will then be handed over to the Swiss diplomats who represent American interests in Iran because the U.S. has no diplomatic relations with Iran.

"Now we can say they are finally free," the lawyer told The Associated Press. "They can go to the U.S. the way (their friend) Sarah did."

The case of Bauer and Fattal, who were convicted of spying for the United States, has deepened the mistrust between Washington and Tehran.

Shafiei said the bail of $500,000 for each of the men was posted after some last-minute problems in the bank were resolved. He did not say what the source of the money was.

"There is no obstacle to their freedom now," the lawyer said. "It's only a matter of time before they are out of jail."

The release of the pair will likely follow the pattern of that of Shourd, who was set free last September after a $500,000 bails was posted. She was then flown on a private plane to the Omani capital, Muscat.

Last week, Oman dispatched a plane belonging to the Gulf country's ruler to fetch the two Americans if the freedom-for-bail was reached.

Omani officials declined to comment on the ongoing proceedings for the Americans' release. They only said the private plane, sent from Muscat to the Iranian capital last Wednesday, was still in Tehran.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Oman has close ties with both Tehran and Washington and plays a strategic role in the region by sharing control with Iran of the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, which is the route for 40 percent of the world's oil tanker traffic.

The three Americans ? friends from their days at the University of California at Berkeley ? have maintained their innocence and denied the espionage charges against them.

Their families say they were just hiking in northern Iraq's scenic and relatively peaceful Kurdish region when they may have accidentally strayed over the unmarked border with Iran.

Since her release last year, Shourd has lived in Oakland, California. Bauer, a freelance journalist, grew up in Onamia, Minnesota, and Fattal, an environmental activist, is from suburban Philadelphia.

Bauer proposed marriage to Shourd while in prison.

Phone messages left for Fattal's mother and brother in Philadelphia were not immediately returned Wednesday.

It was not clear where the two men will be reunited with their families after their release. The last direct contact family members had with Bauer and Fattal was in May 2010 when their mothers were permitted a short visit in Tehran.

Former Big Eight chief Neinas contacted by Big 12 (AP)

Former Big Eight Commissioner Chuck Neinas says he's been contacted by the Big 12 about possibly being the conferences interim commissioner, and that he told the league's leaders he was interested.

The Big 12 presidents were scheduled to meet Thursday to discuss ways to stabilize the league. Apparently, a change of leadership is part of that plan.

Neinas told The Associated Press on Thursday morning that he had not yet been retained. He says: "If that happened, it would happen at the end of the day."

The Kansas City Star, citing two sources with knowledge of the decision, reported Wednesday night that current Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe was working on an agreement to leave his position and that an announcement of Beebe's departure was expected Thursday.

Significantly greater commercialisation of the Internet.

With the advent of powerful home computers and advanced operating systems, these advances in computer networking enabled streaming media to become a practical and affordable proposition for the nation at large.

Another advance was the introduction of stand-alone Internet radio devices, which are hardware devices that receive and play audio from internet radio stations or the user's PC or other embedded media servers. For the first time, this provided listeners with the ability to listen to audio streams without the requirement of a PC.

In general, multimedia content is large, so media storage and transmission costs are still significant.

In order to compensate for this, media is generally compressed, such as in a ZIP file format, which provides compression, and also acts as an archiver, storing many source files in a single destination output file, for both storage and streaming.

A media stream can be either on demand or live. In the case of on demand streams, the content is stored on a server for long periods of time, and is available for transmission on request. Live streams, on the other hand, are only available at one particular time, such as in a video stream of a live sporting event.

Giving people loans to finance energy efficiency improvements?is proving to be a stable, low risk investment with low default rates and large-scale potential, according to a study released by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

ACEEE?analyzed?24 energy efficiency loan programs and found?extremely low default rates, ranging from 0-3% throughout the life of the loans.

Default rates?have also remained largely unchanged, even during the near collapse of the real estate market over the past few years.

"Energy efficiency loans are proving to be a winning investment in a time of economic uncertainty. Based on these findings, now is the time to scale-up to serve many more homeowners and businesses," says ACEEE Executive Director Steven Nadel.

Energy efficiency loans finance building upgrades by providing funding directly to building owners or managers. These projects lower energy bills and reduce annual energy costs by an average of 12-17%. Small commercial banks and credit unions have led in offering these?loans, often working with utilities as well as local and state governments.

The programs?ACEEE evaluated?have loaned over $1.5 billion at interest rates averaging 3-5%, through the use of subsidies and energy program funds.

These?loan programs barely?scratch the surface of the potential market even though they?represent the largest energy efficiency financing efforts to date in the US.?Less than?0.5% of those who could apply for these loans do so.?

"These low participation rates indicate there is a vast untapped customer base still available in this market. I think we'll see increased private investment as big banks adopt the model that community banks and credit unions have found so profitable," observes Sara Hayes, lead author of the report.

Large banks haven't invested?because of the?lack of centralized information on how the loans are performing and their inability to evaluate default risks.

Furthermore, each loan tends to be small, averaging?$9,000 for residential projects and $73,000 for commercial/industrial/public projects. To?attract the interest of large financial institutions,? loans would need to be bundled?for resale on the secondary market.

"The financial sector has shown itself to be extremely adept at scaling programs that serve customer needs well. Consider, for example, the growth in the performance contracting and green building finance markets," says Joel Freehling, Senior Energy Finance Consultant at Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure and author of the first paper in ACEEE's series on energy efficiency financing. "It's finding the right place to start and locating the right partners that often stymy further growth in the energy finance field. If these hurdles can be overcome, we could see huge growth in these programs."

Hey everybody. I am applying for four different positions at a very large business. They are all very similar but are with different divisions within the company. I am submitting an application and my resume via the Careers portion of their website and was wondering if I should submit cover letters for each individual position. Would it reflect negatively to have 4 cover letters that read the same except for the "position I am applying for" section?
