Are pills the new alcohol?

Here's a quote from the March 26, 2012 New York Magazine cover story, "Listening to Xanax: How America Learned to Stop Worrying About Worrying and Pop its Pills Instead," by Lisa Miller:

So reliably relaxing are the effects of benzodiazepines that SAMHSA's director of substance-abuse treatment, H. Wesley Clark, says they've gained a reputation as 'alcohol in a pill.' And their consumption can be equally informal. Just as friends pour wine for friends in times of crisis, so too do doctors, moved by the angst of their patients, 'have sympathy and prescribe more,' says Clark. There are a lot more benzos circulating these days, and a lot more sharing.

The article is accompanied by an illustration called "Chill-Pill Matchmaking," which shows "four anxious archetypes and the drugs that might suit them." The recommended pills are Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin and Valium.

Last I checked, these were some heavy-duty drugs, and yes, some people cannot function without them. But those who can function without them would be better off trying to deal with the anxiety another way. Because Xanax is extremely addictive, it is only approved by the FDA for up to eight weeks of use. In Great Britain, it is only approved for four weeks of use. Withdrawal symptoms can last for up to a year.

The thing is, pills and alcohol are not equal. Consider this: According to the CDC, nationwide, one person dies every 19 minutes of prescription drug overdoses. Mixing drugs and alcohol can be deadly, but many people don't think twice about popping a Xanax and still having their alcohol of choice.

I remember being in my 20s, living in Manhattan, going out every night with my friends. Drinking was the center of my social life, and I didn't want to give it up, even for one night. If I was on antibiotics, and the doctor said drinking was not recommended, I drank anyway. I'd rationalize it, telling my friends, "It's not like the doctor said definitely don't drink. He just said he didn't recommend it."

Many people who already drink alcohol as a regular part of their routine are simply adding the pills on top of it, instead of substituting one for the other.

In an article on the dangers of mixing prescription drugs and alcohol in the Miami Herald, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN chief medical correspondent, explains that part of the problem is the perception that legal drugs are safe. If a doctor prescribes it, it must be okay.

Dr. Gupta says in his interview with the Miami Herald that doctors need to give stronger warnings. According to Gupta, when doctors say, "Don't drink if you are taking this medication," it seems like a courtesy warning. Gupta believes that "a warning that a person dies every 19 minutes would be a stronger warning."

Nobody's giving up, but there's not a lot of reason to cheer, either: ?"We're not winning" when it comes to the war on hackers attacking corporate networks, the FBI's outgoing cyber chief said in an interview.?

"We've been playing defense for a long time ...You can only build a fence so high, and what we've found is that the offense outpaces the defense, and the offense is better than the defense,'' Shawn Henry said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

His remarks follow those made by FBI director Robert Mueller earlier this month. At a security conference, Mueller said he expects cyber threats to pass terrorism as the nation's top threat.

Henry, who will be leaving the bureau after more than 20 years and will work for a cybersecurity firm, told the Journal that more and more, FBI agents are finding data stolen from companies that didn't have any idea their computer networks had been accessed.

"We have found their data in the middle of other investigations,'' he said in the interview. "They are shocked and, in many cases, they've been breached for many months, in some cases years, which means that an adversary had full visibility into everything occurring on that network, potentially.''

A bill introduced into the House Tuesday would let companies and the federal government more easily share information about cybersecurity threats.?

H.R. 4263, from Republican congresswomen Mary Bono Mack and Marsha Blackburn, "increases penalties for hacking into servers and removes roadblocks that prevent government security experts from discussing threats with their counterparts at Internet service providers and other companies," according to Reuters. The bill is similar to one introduced earlier this month in the Senate by Republican senator John McCain.?

Democrats, too, have proposed legislation that would put more of the onus on companies to prove to the federal government that their networks are secure.

Henry said that despite hacker attacks on high-profile companies like Lockheed Martin and Citigroup, companies large and small still are not taking security seriously enough.

"I don't see how we ever come out of this without changes in technology or changes in behavior, because with the status quo, it's an unsustainable model. Unsustainable in that you never get ahead, never become secure, never have a reasonable expectation of privacy or security."

Meanwhile,?National Security Agency director General Keith Alexander "revealed that the attack against online security company RSA last year originated from China," according to The Verge, which said Alexander told the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday "that China is responsible for 'a great deal' of theft of military-related intellectual property from the US."

House Shoots Down Legislation That Would Have Stopped Employers From Demanding Your Facebook Password

Well, that didn't take long. A proposed Facebook user protection amendment introduced yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives has already been shot down. The legislation, offered by?Democratic Congressman Ed Perlmutter, would have added new restrictions to FCC rules that would have prohibited employers from demanding workers' social networking usernames and passwords. The final vote was 236 to 184, with only one House Republican voting in support of the changes.

Michael Bay To 'Ninja Turtles' Fans: We Won't Let You Down!

'Everything that is near and dear to fans will still be there,' director Jonathan Liebesman tells MTV News after producer catches flak for reboot.

Who could have predicted that a Michael Bay-produced re-imagining of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" would cause such a stir? While fans were largely onboard for a reboot, the tide turned when Bay recently announced that he would give our half-shell heroes an alien origin story.

Fan reaction to the news has been negative, to say the least. So much so that Bay has already twice taken to his Shoot for the Edit message board to tell fans that the reboot will not disappoint. On Tuesday (March 27), Bay hit the boards again, promising that the new movie will include "everything you remember" from the original; he also explained why the film's name is "Ninja Turtles," not "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

"Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple," he wrote.

"The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers," he added. "Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan [Liebesman], the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE'S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN."

Speaking of Liebesman, MTV News caught up with the director as he promoted his latest, "Wrath of the Titans," and he seemed to share Bay's sentiment, saying the new version will preserve "the essence" of the original.

"What's important to me are the characters that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created, the essence is preserved, and we're true to that," Liebesman said. "And everything that is near and dear to fans will still be there, every new thing we think of is tied into the mythology. We're not going to betray anything that has been there before — I'm a fan myself."

"Ninja Turtles" is due in theaters Christmas 2013.

Newt Gingrich Demands Apology From Robert De Niro Over "First White Lady" Joke

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich called on President Obama to apologize for comments made by actor Robert De Niro at a fundraiser Monday.

"What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong," Gingrich said.

What did the actor say to draw such a harsh rebuke?

De Niro told a New York City crowd of about 90 people, including his wife and First Lady Michelle Obama, that it was "too soon" for a "white first lady."

"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?" the 68-year-old asked, jokingly.

The crowd roared. Someone yelled "No!" De Niro asked, "Too soon, right?"

Gingrich said the comments made by De Niro "divide the country."

"If people on the left want to talk about radio show hosts, then everybody in the country ought to hold the president accountable when somebody at his event says something as utterly, totally unacceptable as Robert De Niro said last night," he said.

If that sounds like a defense of Rush Limbaugh, it sort of is. Newt has a point about double standards of media coverage, but De Niro was likely making light of the fact that so many people viewed Obama's 2008 candidacy in racial terms.

In any case, Gingrich said the president should hold De Niro accountable.

"On behalf of my wife, and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney, I think Robert De Niro is wrong. I think this country is ready for a new First Lady and he doesn't have to describe it in racial terms," he added.

The White House and the First Lady's office agreed with Newt. "We believe the joke was inappropriate," said Olivia Alair, Michelle Obama's press secretary.

The proceeds from Monday's event benefitted the Obama Victory Fund, a joint venture supporting the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee.

It's hard not to make a series of reductive comparisons between the Nook Tablet and the Kindle Fire. After all, it's the conflict between Barnes & Noble and Amazon that frames these two 7-inch tablet / e-reader hybrids. Ex-Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has book deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? Retired St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is ready to look back on his amazing career.

William Morrow announced Monday that "One Last Strike: Fifty Years in Baseball, Ten and a Half Games Back, and One Final Championship Season," is tentatively scheduled to come out this fall. The book will be co-written by Rick Hummel, a longtime reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

La Russa retired last fall after managing the Cardinals to a dramatic World Series title.

The 67-year-old La Russa spent more than 30 years as a manager. His career included three World Series championships ? two with St. Louis, one with the Oakland Athletics ? and six league championships.
