In our rush to get as many things as possible done, we often leave out finishing touches. It's that final polish that can take a job, an outfit, a piece of art from good to great. Where is it that we tend to go wrong and how can we do a better job?
1. On the job:
No matter what the industry, the more clients you have the better. In recruiting new business, you have to have a section of your company dedicated to winning business and the other section maintaining it. But realistic goals need to be set, otherwise those doing the work won't have enough time, and the final product will suffer. Taking on as much as you can handle is something a lot of people struggle with. But there's not much point in acquiring a new client if they're never going to use again because your work wasn't good enough.
2. With ourselves:
Whether it be getting dressed in the morning, allowing ourselves enough time at the gym or getting sufficient rest, we often don't listen to our minds and bodies because the clock is ticking and we are being pulled in a hundred directions. Learning to say no to some obligations and spending that extra few moments pressing a shirt, fixing your hair, sleeping a little earlier, or getting in those 50 crunches at the gym will have you looking and feeling great.
3. In the aesthetic world:
How many times has your house painter left a mess on your front porch? How often to visual artists forget small details, like a clean border on a canvas, a frame around a photo, or an extra coat of varnish on a piece of pottery. Clean finishes make all the difference to the look and saleability of a piece of art.
4. In your home:
It might be as small as keeping fresh flowers in your home, but touches like that make a huge impact. A clean house that's free of unsightly vents or pipes is always nicer than a messy or dirty one. Fabric cladding is an effective way to cover up interior imperfections. Nice smelling candles, a clean kitchen and a made bed are a few small ways to keep your home in order.
The work you've done may be good, but no one will recognize that if you got lazy at the end. In some ways, the finishing touches are the most important.
