Syracuse plows through WVU and snow, 38-14
NEW YORK (AP) ? The weather made passing at the Pinstripe Bowl perilous, so Syracuse sent Prince-Tyson Gulley and Jerome Smith dashing through West Virginia and the snow.
Gulley ran for a career-best 208 yards and had three touchdowns, Smith added 157 yards, and the Orange bid a blustery farewell to the Big East with a 38-14 victory Saturday.
Syracuse (8-5) will enter the Atlantic Coast Conference on a roll after finishing this season with six wins in its last seven games, capped by its second postseason victory at Yankee Stadium in the last three years.
In a bowl played in a baseball stadium, with weather more suited for a playoff game in Green Bay, the team that plays in a dome ended up being better equipped to handle the elements.
"The football Gods brought snow," said Smith, who carried a season-high 30 times. "The football Gods from Syracuse brought us some snow and it changed even West Virginia's game. Geno Smith connected with Stedman Bailey for two touchdown passes for West Virginia (7-6), but the Mountaineers' quarterback also was sacked in the end zone in the first half and called for intentional grounding in the end zone in the third quarter to give Syracuse a second safety.
Smith, who was an early Heisman Trophy front-runner as the Mountaineers got off to a 5-0 start this season, was 16 for 26 for 197 yards in the final game of his record-breaking career. The NFL awaits.
Same goes for Ryan Nassib, though Syracuse didn't ask much of its talented senior quarterback. He threw two touchdown passes and an interception. His most impressive feat on this day was surviving being driven into the cold turf by Terence Garvin on a sack in the first half. Nassib missed only one play.
"It's my last game, man, nothing's going to take me out," he said.
Especially against a West Virginia team the Orange felt didn't give them much credit after two straight victories over the Mountaineers.
"It was about us going out there and getting respect," tackle Justin Pugh said. "They didn't give us any respect. We kind of said three strikes you're out. Beat them three straight times, so they really can't say anything now."
Snow fell just about all game, giving most of the field a white dusting. Fans were bundled and players not in the game tried to do the same. It took a while for those potent offenses ? both ranked in the top 25 nationally in yards per game ? to heat up, which seemed appropriate considering the conditions.
"Cold. Cold," said Jerome Smith, a junior from Delaware. "I never got a chance to play in the snow, but it was good."
His running mate from Akron, Ohio, had just a bit more experience playing in wintry weather.
"In pee-wees I played in some (snow) like this but not in high school," said Gulley, who carried 25 times. "It was fun."
A goal-line stand by West Virginia in the second quarter kept Syracuse out of the end zone, but set up the Orange for a scoring run.
Left at the 1, the Mountaineers tried to pass out of their end zone, but Geno Smith was smothered by blitzing linebackers Cameron Lynch and Siriki Diabate to make it 5-0 ? a baseball score, of course.
The Orange followed that up with a 33-yard touchdown run by Gulley to make it 12-0 with 6:07 left in the second.
The Mountaineers responded with their first sustained drive. Bailey took a quick pass, darted and broke tackles, and scooted 32 yards to the end zone to make it 12-7.
The Orange extended the lead to 12 to start the second half when they caught a break ? and a touchdown pass. Nassib's throw was tipped around the goal line, but floated safely into the waiting arms of intended receiver Beckett Wales for a 10-yard score.
West Virginia appeared to answer with a touchdown of its own. Andrew Buie broke free for a 28-yard TD run on fourth-and-2. Not so fast. A holding call on the Mountaineers wiped out the play and sent Holgorsen on to the field screaming at the officials.
It didn't help. Instead of a touchdown, a punt.
Holgorsen had nothing to say about the call and was more disappointed with how his team responded.
"We did a poor job of continuing to play. A poor job of overcoming some things," he said.
Moments later another close call, this time on a fumble by Geno Smith which was reviewed to determine if it was an incomplete pass, went Syracuse's way, and again the Orange capitalized.
On the next play, Gulley broke through the line, bounced to the outside and went 67 yards for a touchdown to make it 26-7 with 6:52 left in the third.
West Virginia wouldn't let Syracuse pull away. Smith found Bailey deep down the sideline, beating one-on-one coverage for a 29-yard score 1:11 later.
Back came the Orange, nine plays, 70 yards, with Gulley taking a swing pass from Nassib 10 yards to make it 33-14.
From there the 60th meeting between these teams, but first in a bowl, was a romp in the snow for Syracuse.

Yet she's not sure how such a move would affect her finances. Even now, she is just getting into sound financial shape after recently landing full-time work. Prior to getting the full-time position, she had to take in a couple of renters and worked two part-time jobs to pay for her $187,000 mortgage.
Now, she earns about $3,200 net from her full-time job, about another $1,700 from renters and $300 from a part-time position every month. While she is now flush with cash to pay down the mortgage, Bonnie is working with her accountant to determine how much money she needs to set aside to pay additional taxes on income earned from part-time work and the renters.
She also needs to build up her savings again after recently taking an overseas vacation, which depleted her chequing account.
Despite these recent financial challenges, however, Bonnie says she's determined to make the move to Winnipeg, and she would like to know how relocating will affect her financial outlook, especially retirement.
"I want to know if I'm doing what I should be doing to get myself ready for retirement."
Certified financial planner Valerie Chatain-White says Bonnie's plan clearly brings up a number of questions she needs to consider before making a decision that will profoundly affect her financial future.
Among the most important are her expected income and future housing costs.
A good idea is for Bonnie to lean heavily on the expertise of her accountant to crunch numbers.
"It would be good to verify with her accountant what she might need to net as income from a new job if she moves," Chatain-White says, adding Bonnie may be eligible for relocation tax credits if she moves to Winnipeg for a job.
As for housing costs, moving from Edmonton to Winnipeg was a lucrative proposition a decade ago because of the large difference in housing prices. Since then, Winnipeg prices have caught up substantially and the market here remains fairly robust, whereas Edmonton's has stabilized.
According to WinnipegRealtors' housing price index, the most active price range in the city is between $250,000 and $299,999. In Edmonton, the average price is about $331,000 so Bonnie can still expect to come out a little bit ahead moving to Winnipeg, providing she can sell her home for about what she paid for it in 2008.
Bonnie bought her home for $357,000, and she may be able to seize upon a number of tax deductions available to her because she has been using her home to generate income. But the fact she has been renting out rooms also clouds the tax picture for her.
When selling a home, most people can use the principal-residence exemption to avoid paying any taxes on capital gains made on the sale. In some circumstances, homeowners may have to pay capital gains on parts of the home that were used for producing income, such as renting out rooms.
Chatain-White says Bonnie will again need the services of her accountant to help her figure out the possible tax implications.
If Bonnie does find work in Winnipeg and buys a home here, she still faces a big challenge: building up her savings for retirement.
Early retirement is certainly out of the question, Chatain-White says.
Even retiring at 65 will be challenging.
Chatain-White made a number of conservative estimates of Bonnie's retirement income, including her CPP.
Chatain-White says in her calculations she low-balled Bonnie's CPP at $500 a month, so Bonnie should log onto the Service Canada website to get a more accurate figure for her expected payments at age 65. With OAS added (Bonnie is old enough to receive full OAS at 65), CPP will make up about half her retirement income.
The remainder will come from her RRSP, about $116,000 at the moment.
"She could use up her money quite quickly if she retires early," Chatain-White says. "If she wants the income from her RRSP to last as long as she does, the rule of thumb is to withdraw five per cent per year -- about $500 a month."
That means Bonnie's estimated monthly retirement income at age 65 would be about $2,000 short of her monthly expenses today of about $3,300.
That's a substantial savings shortfall to make up in the next decade.
Moving from Edmonton to Winnipeg could have a positive effect on her financial situation. She could make a few thousand dollars profit on the sale of her home, which should be invested for retirement. But she could just as easily end up breaking even while possibly earning less at a new job. And she'd be paying more in taxes. Alberta has no sales tax except GST, and its income taxes are a flat 10 per cent rate whereas Manitoba's highest rate marginal rate is 17.4 per cent for earnings more than $67,000.
Needless to say, Bonnie has lots of homework to do before making a major decision.
Yet regardless of where she lives, she can count on one certainty.
"Bonnie would need to work at least for another 10 years if she wants to maintain the lifestyle she now enjoys."

Potentially more interesting, for where the market, and the workplace itself, are going are companies that are betting their future strictly on the cloud. These companies, among them Appirio, and Cloud Sherpas, are selling different means of using software as much as they are cost savings.
?This is very different from using an on-premise piece of software,? said David Northington, the chief executive of Cloud Sherpas, which is based in Atlanta, Ga. His business, which also involves installing and customizing systems for Salesforce.com, is about ?software to be developed and deployed quickly,? he said, ?we can focus on user adoption and innovation.?
Software can be deployed and updated faster in cloud systems because of the central control. If you make changes to a calendar function, for example, or patch a potential security flaw, it can show up on everyone?s machines the next time they log in.
You can also change the way that other programmers and consultants approach work. Appirio, based in New York, is attempting to build a crowdsourced method of writing custom business software applications. Mini TARDIS really is bigger on the inside, thanks to augmented reality (video)
Once in a while we'd come across some cool DIY projects inspired by Doctor Who, the world's longest-running sci-fi TV show, but nothing beats this little TARDIS that would actually make you gasp out the classic line: "It's bigger on the inside!" Greg Kumparak, a former writer of sister site TechCrunch, initially built nothing more than just a convincing model of the iconic blue police box (with a functioning light at the top) by hand, but soon afterwards he wanted to somehow give it an interior as well.
By utilizing the Blender 3D creation suite (which was a first for Kumparak), Unity 3D engine and Qualcomm's Vuforia AR SDK, the result is an Android app that renders the 3D interior atop the random wave-like pattern -- visible once the door's removed -- on the TARDIS in real time (no pun intended). Once you've seen the demo video after the break, you'd probably agree that Kumparak's only one sonic screwdriver away from becoming an honorary Time Lord. Former Braves player arrested on battery charge
DULUTH, Ga. (AP) ? Former Atlanta Braves star center fielder Andruw Jones was free on bond after being arrested in suburban Atlanta early Tuesday on a battery charge, according to jail records.
Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call for a domestic dispute between Jones and his wife in Duluth.
Gwinnett County Detention Center records say Jones was booked into the jail around 3:45 a.m. and had been released on $2,400 bond by 11 a.m.
Once one of the premier players in the big leagues, Jones broke into the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 1996 and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1998-07 as their center fielder. He has 434 career home runs over the span of 17 seasons in the majors.
Jones earlier this month signed a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

Serpico: Pacino played me better than I did
NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City police whistle-blower Frank Serpico says Al Pacino played him better than he did himself.
Pacino played the detective who exposed widespread police corruption in the 1973 movie "Serpico." The Daily News (http://nydn.us/RMNYcB ) interviewed the real-life Serpico in Ghent, in New York's Hudson Valley, for a story published Sunday.
The 76-year-old retiree spoke weeks after the death of fellow whistle-blowing ex-detective David Durk.
Serpico smiled as an interviewer noted he is ranked No. 41, just behind Lassie, on the American Film Institute's list of movie heroes. He says that's "good company."
The newspaper says Serpico keeps busy trying to finish a book and taking solitary walks.
Serpico and Durk's efforts resulted in front-page newspaper stories and a city panel that recommended reforms to prevent police corruption.

Game Theory: A Year When Real-World Violence Crept Into Play ...
Dear Stephen, Kirk, gentle readers and online trolls,
Welcome to the first edition of Game Theory, a conversation about the year in video games. Some introductions for the uninitiated: Stephen Totilo is the editor in chief of the gaming news site Kotaku.com, and he also writes about video games for The New York Times; Kirk Hamilton is the features editor at Kotaku; and I?m the deputy editor of Yahoo News, and a writer of video game reviews for The Times. The three of us will be bickering ? I mean, coming to a friendly consensus ? about the year?s best games, the year?s worst games and about what 2012 indicated about the state and future of this creative medium.

We?ll be joined here and on the ArtsBeat blog by some distinguished guests: Rich Moore, the director of ?Wreck-It Ralph,? by my lights the finest movie about video games ever made; Lucy Prebble, the British playwright of ?Enron? and ?The Effect,? now onstage in London; Gavin Purcell, the supervising producer of ?Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,? probably the most prominent place in pop culture that evinces an interest in new games and their creators; Helen Lewis, the deputy editor of The New Statesman, a British current-affairs magazine; and Jenn Frank, whose essay at Unwinnable.com (?Allow Natural Death?) about her mother, video games and death might have been the most widely circulated piece of online writing about games this year, as measured by cursory glances at my Twitter feed.
It?s hard to talk about video games and 2012 without addressing the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and the inevitable debate over violent games that emerged from the entirely predictable discovery that Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old gunman, played Call of Duty games. (Perhaps he also ate Big Macs; he?s in that core demographic too.) There?s no evidence that video games cause ? or even correlate with ? violence, and that can?t be stated often enough. And one of the most pleasurable aspects of playing in 2012 was how many tremendous games had nothing to do with shooting people in the face.
But I do think gamers are overly defensive about the news media?s focus on video game violence. Video games, or at least some of them, are horrifically violent. Tom Bissell, writing for Grantland this year, phrased it this way: ?Why do gamers want their puzzles to bleed and scream?? It?s worth at least engaging with the question.
I have a pretty strong stomach when it comes to violence ? I intend to see ?Django Unchained? and expect to enjoy it mightily ? but I have to admit that I?m a little tired of all the killing in my video games. No, games don?t turn people into killers. But since the day when 28 people died in Newtown, I have craved games (and other things) with more beauty and less blood.
Newtown struck home, in part, because in my personal life 2012 has been about fatherhood: My wife and I welcomed our second daughter. But parenthood kept creeping into my games in 2012 too (and not just because I couldn?t help noticing the similarities between raising a child, walking a dog, and playing a video game). In a continuation of the phenomenon that Stephen has called ?The Daddening of Video Games,? the past 12 months were filled with games that led me to reflect on the relationship between a father and a child.
Lee and Clementine in the Walking Dead game series are not biologically related, but over the course of the five episodes she becomes something close to a daughter to him. The stunning final moments of the Unfinished Swan (for my money the greatest credit sequence in gaming history) are a meditation on how having children ? in the words of Joel Lovell, the deputy editor of The New York Times Magazine, in another context ? simultaneously saves and destroys your life. And most of all, Papo & Yo ? my favorite game of the year ? ended once and for all the tedious debate over whether a game can make you cry, or whether you should be ashamed if it can.
Video game players can be a pretty ungrateful lot, and while I think that 2012 will not be remembered as the finest year in the medium?s history (and it was certainly underwhelming when it comes to blockbuster releases), it?s worth remembering that there is much to be enthusiastic about: Sony?s Vita hand-held and Nintendo?s Wii U console show great promise; the Nintendo 3DS has a new version with a much-needed bigger screen; and, best of all, downloadable games have finally arrived, en masse, as full-fledged rivals to the best of what the big game studios offer.
For what it?s worth, my wife and I don?t let our daughters play video games. The older is only 2? and can?t master Slap Jack, much less Candy Land, much less Angry Birds, much less Call of Duty: Black Ops II. But Michael Abbott?s essay at Brainy Gamer on playing Skyrim with his 4?-year-old daughter gave me something to look forward to, and one of these days she?ll be ready.
Until then, it?s a little sad that I find myself quickly hiding some of the games that arrive in the mail for my perusal, because their cover art is too frightening. Yes, many games are about something other than carnage. But merely by looking at pictures on boxes, a 2-year-old girl has figured out that more often than not these things ? and she doesn?t even know what they are ? are about fighting and physical violence.
It?s tough to believe these three things at once: 1. Video games are a uniquely powerful medium of communication. 2. They have a negligible effect on behavior, whether promoting violence or aggression or hugs or butterfly collecting. 3. Children should be shielded from violent games (and from all violent media) for a very, very long time, and the 10-year-olds who are playing Call of Duty: Black Ops II (or going to see ?The Dark Knight Rises?) are being failed by their parents.
I believe all three arguments are correct. But I?m not sure I can explain how they logically cohere.

Pagan roots? 5 surprising Christmas facts
When you gather around the Christmas tree or stuff goodies into a stocking, you're taking part in traditions that stretch back thousands of years ? long before Christianity entered the mix.
Pagan, or non-Christian, traditions show up in this beloved winter holiday, a consequence of early church leaders melding Jesus' nativity celebration with pre-existing midwinter festivals. Since then, Christmas traditions have warped over time, arriving at their current state a little more than a century ago.
Read on for some of the surprising origins of Christmas cheer, and find out why Christmas was once banned in New England.
1. Early Christians had a soft spot for pagans
It's a mistake to say that our modern Christmas traditions come directly from pre-Christian paganism, said Ronald Hutton, a historian at Bristol University in the United Kingdom. However, he said, you'd be equally wrong to believe that Christmas is a modern phenomenon. As Christians spread their religion into Europe in the first centuries A.D., they ran into people living by a variety of local and regional religious creeds.
Christian missionaries lumped all of these people together under the umbrella term "pagan," said Philip Shaw, who researches early Germanic languages and Old English at Leicester University in the U.K. The term is related to the Latin word meaning "field," Shaw told LiveScience. The lingual link makes sense, he said, because early European Christianity was an urban phenomenon, while paganism persisted longer in rustic areas.
Early Christians wanted to convert pagans, Shaw said, but they were also fascinated by their traditions.
"Christians of that period are quite interested in paganism," he said. "It's obviously something they think is a bad thing, but it's also something they think is worth remembering. It's what their ancestors did." [In Photos: Early Christian Rome]
Perhaps that's why pagan traditions remained even as Christianity took hold. The Christmas tree is a 17th-century German invention, University of Bristol's Hutton told LiveScience, but it clearly derives from the pagan practice of bringing greenery indoors to decorate in midwinter. The modern Santa Claus is a direct descendent of England's Father Christmas, who was not originally a gift-giver. However, Father Christmas and his other European variations are modern incarnations of old pagan ideas about spirits who traveled the sky in midwinter, Hutton said.
2. We all want that warm Christmas glow
But why this fixation on partying in midwinter, anyway? According to historians, it's a natural time for a feast. In an agricultural society, the harvest work is done for the year, and there's nothing left to be done in the fields.
"It's a time when you have some time to devote to your religious life," said Shaw. "But also it's a period when, frankly, everyone needs cheering up."
The dark days that culminate with the shortest day of the year ?? the winter solstice ? could be lightened with feasts and decorations, Hutton said.
"If you happen to live in a region in which midwinter brings striking darkness and cold and hunger, then the urge to have a celebration at the very heart of it to avoid going mad or falling into deep depression is very, very strong," he said.
Stephen Nissenbaum, author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist "The Battle for Christmas" (Vintage, 1997), agreed.
"Even now when solstice means not all that much because you can get rid of the darkness with the flick of an electric light switch, even now, it's a very powerful season," he told LiveScience.
3. The Church was slow to embrace Christmas
Despite the spread of Christianity, midwinter festivals did not become Christmas for hundreds of years. The Bible gives no reference to when Jesus was born, which wasn't a problem for early Christians, Nissenbaum said.
"It never occurred to them that they needed to celebrate his birthday," he said.
With no Biblical directive to do so and no mention in the Gospels of the correct date, it wasn't until the fourth century that church leaders in Rome embraced the holiday. At this time, Nissenbaum said, many people had turned to a belief the Church found heretical: That Jesus had never existed as a man, but as a sort of spiritual entity.
"If you want to show that Jesus was a real human being just like every other human being, not just somebody who appeared like a hologram, then what better way to think of him being born in a normal, humble human way than to celebrate his birth?" Midwinter festivals, with their pagan roots, were already widely celebrated, Nissenbaum said. And the date had a pleasing philosophical fit with festivals celebrating the lengthening days after the winter solstice (which fell on Dec. 21 this year). "O, how wonderfully acted Providence that on that day on which that Sun was born ? Christ should be born," one Cyprian text read.

4. The Puritans hated the holiday
But if the Catholic Church gradually came to embrace Christmas, the Protestant Reformation gave the holiday a good knock on the chin. In the 16th century, Christmas became a casualty of this church schism, with reformist-minded Protestants considering it little better than paganism, Nissenbaum said. This likely had something to do with the "raucous, rowdy and sometimes bawdy fashion" in which Christmas was celebrated, he added.
In England under Oliver Cromwell, Christmas and other saints' days were banned, and in New England it was illegal to celebrate Christmas for about 25 years in the 1600s, Nissenbaum said. Forget people saying, "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas," he said.
"If you want to look at a real 'War on Christmas,' you've got to look at the Puritans," he said. "They banned it!"
5. Gifts are a new (and surprisingly controversial) tradition
While gift-giving may seem inextricably tied to Christmas, it used to be that people looked forward to opening presents on New Year's Day.
"They were a blessing for people to make them feel good as the year ends," Hutton said. It wasn't until the Victorian era of the 1800s that gift-giving shifted to Christmas. According to the Royal Collection, Queen Victoria's children got Christmas Eve gifts in 1850, including a sword and armor. In 1841, Victoria gave her husband, Prince Albert, a miniature portrait of her as a 7-year-old; in 1859, she gave him a book of poetry by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
All of this gift-giving, along with the secular embrace of Christmas, now has some religious groups steamed, Nissenbaum said. The consumerism of Christmas shopping seems, to some, to contradict the religious goal of celebrating Jesus Christ's birth. In some ways, Nissenbaum said, excessive spending is the modern equivalent of the revelry and drunkenness that made the Puritans frown.
"There's always been a push and pull, and it's taken different forms," he said. "It might have been alcohol then, and now it's these glittering toys."

The victims of the Sandy Hook school massacre have been laid to rest more than a week after the shootings.
