When it comes to mobile marketing, the first thing most small business owners think of is sending out text messages. ?You know the drill. ?Have your customers sign up for a mailing list at the cash register?with the hope that they?ll write down their real name, email address and cell phone number. ?Then proceed to send them weekly, or even worse, daily messages touting your special offers or store events. ?Customers get annoyed by this, really really annoyed.
I experienced this firsthand several years ago after attending a salsa dancing class. ?Upon arriving at the class, I was asked to sign-in with my name and cell phone number. ?Not thinking anything of it, I obliged. ?Big mistake. ?It?s a bit overwhelming receiving a text message about?gyrating?your hips to the rhythm of the night on Salsa Mondays, Salsa Tuesdays, Salsa Wednesdays, Salsa Thursdays and Salsa Fridays.
It?s essentially the mobile version of email spam, but the good news is that there are other mobile marketing options available to small business owners besides text messages. ?Check out these 5 mobile marketing tips from Entrepreneur:
?
1) Mobile-friendly Website
Surprisingly, the most important step a small business owner can take to market their business via mobile is to make sure their website works on mobile devices, whether an iPhone, Android, Blackberry or tablets such as the iPad. ?The reason for this is that most older websites, especially sites heavy on Flash, were not designed for today?s mobile browsers.
2) Location-based Services
Believe it or not, your customers are probably already ?checking-in,? reviewing and talking about your business using location-based services such as Foursquare and Yelp. ?This is a sure-fire way to engage with your customers by offering them a special offer upon ?checking-in? to your business when they visit or answer their customer service issues on poor reviews.
3) Mobile App
Having a mobile app developed for your business used to be cost-prohibitive for most small business owners, but there the price-points have dropped and can be palatable depending on how robust the application features are.
4) QR Codes
Quick response codes are able to store more information and, upon being scanned by a smartphone, can link to a website URL, photo or video. ?After corporate marketers paved the path for integrating QR codes into their mobile marketing strategy, more and more small business owners are using QR codes to market their products and services.
Check out:?How to Market Your Small Business Using QR Codes
5) Mobile Content
Be sure to take advantage of the other mobile channels already available to you, whether publishing and selling an ebook in the Amazon Kindle?e-reader?store, recording a podcast to be sold in the Apple iTunes store or simply your email newsletter.

The following article will give some pointers on how to create the professional podcast you have always wanted to do but just weren?t sure where to start.
Edit While Your Record: Doing your editing as you are recording your podcast is an important step to keep in mind. You don?t want to end up with any unnatural pauses when your podcast plays, so it is very important that when you are recording something and need to edit, that you take care of it right away by pausing, editing and then continue recording. Your podcast will sound much more professional when you edit in this way and it will prevent an uncomfortable listening experience for your listeners. A badly edited podcast can be seen as unprofessional and make your listeners uncomfortable which will result in a low response from them. Getting in the flow is necessary, but at the same time you should try to cut down on any instances that make you look like you?re not in the flow. Don?t Brag About Yourself: Seriously, the last thing you?d want to do in your podcast is brag about who you are and what makes you so great. While a small introduction about yourself might be needed at times, taking yourself too seriously won?t make your readers happy. Keep in mind at all times that the people want receive some value to from listening to your podcast. Don?t make this all about ?you?, but rather about ?them?. Going on and on about your expertise in your niche or how you can save the economy to your listeners is something you shouldn?t do at all. If you are good, it will be obvious. And that?s that.
Fill it With Quality: If you have a lot of good content to offer, then fill your space with as much of it as you can and avoid leaving space that doesn?t offer value. The listeners are going to be quick when it comes to listening and analyzing your content, which means their minds will be moving a lot quicker than your mouth. So be sure to move as fast as you can while putting in as much value and goodness into your podcast. Because trying to get everything into a short podcast can be tricky, its important to stay on topic and get to the point as quickly as possible.
Using the tips given above will make it easier for you to understand how to create an effective podcast, which if you know what steps to take and where you want to go, isn?t as hard as it sounds.

This is so bizarre, shocking, and sad.
After Russell Armstrong tragically took his own life, his friend and business associate, Alan Schram, the managing partner at an LA-based hedge fund, was also found dead outside of his car on Mulholland Drive, having shot himself in the head.
Apparently, both men were part of an exclusive organization for high net-worth people who trade info about investments called Tiger 21, and during Russell's service, some of the castmembers of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills were overheard talking about how strange it is that both men took their own lives possibly one day apart.
Neither reportedly left a note, and it's unclear what Schram's financial situation was like.
What on Earth was going on with these men?
Regardless, they clearly had serious issues far beyond just money, and we sincerely hope that wherever they both are, they are at peace.
Our thoughts go out to all their loved ones and families during this impossibly difficult time.

LONDON (AP) -Humiliated after Arsenal conceded the most goals in a game since the 19th century, Arsene Wenger began plotting Monday how to turn around the beleaguered team's fortunes during the two-week international break.
Sunday's 8-2 thrashing by Manchester United left Arsenal with just one point after three matches of the Premier League season and plunged Wenger into the deepest crisis of his 15-year reign.
Wenger says "the players go away for two weeks and maybe that is a good thing ... big scores are humiliating and difficult to swallow."
Captain Robin van Persie says Arsenal can't "hide behind injuries or suspensions. It is no excuse."
And Arsenal announced Monday it will compensate those fans who traveled to Old Trafford by paying for a future away match ticket.

BEIJING ? China's most popular microblogging site is cracking down on what it says is the spread of false rumors after the ruling Communist Party told Internet companies to tighten control over information online.
The move by Sina Corp. reflects the pressure on China's Internet companies, most of which are privately owned, to take initiative to help Beijing enforce censorship or risk losing the right to operate profitable businesses in a fast-growing market.
Sina's Weibo service has sent notices to its 200 million users denying two reports posted on the site, including one about the killing of a 19-year-old woman. It said the accounts of users who originated the reports were temporarily closed.
The move comes amid the ruling party's most sweeping crackdown on dissent in years as it tries to prevent the rise of Middle East-style protests.
The party secretary for Beijing, Liu Qi, visited Sina's headquarters last Monday and said Internet companies should block the spread of false and harmful information, according to a party newspaper. Liu gave no details of what the party wanted, but Sina issued a statement Thursday saying it would "put more effort into attacking all kinds of rumors."
Beijing encourages Internet use for education and business but worries about its potential to spread criticism of communist rule. Authorities tightened controls after social networking and other websites played a key role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.
Weibo users reacted with dismay to Sina's move.
"The constitution stipulates freedom of speech, but there is no freedom of speech in reality," said one posting on the site. "Please refute this rumor."
Sina's announcement gave no indication it was following government orders but many user comments said it reacted to Liu's visit.
Others questioned whether the ruling party would use the policy to suppress the spread of true information that might embarrass officials.
"Do not ban the truth through `refuting rumors,'" said one.
Web bulletin boards and Sina's microblogging site are especially sensitive because they give China's general public a rare opportunity to express opinions to a wide audience in a society where the party controls all media.
Communist leaders have allowed such services as they try to strike a balance between controlling information and developing an Internet industry they hope will help drive China's modernization. Private sector Internet services are required to monitor content on their own and quickly remove any that violates censorship rules.
Sina CEO Charles Chao told Forbes magazine in March that Weibo had at least 100 employees monitoring content 24 hours a day.
In its announcements Friday, Sina denied a report on Weibo that a suspect in the slaying of a 19-year-old woman was freed in the central city of Wuhan because of his politically influential father. It cited police as saying the suspect was still in detention.
Sina said the account of the user who spread the report was suspended for one month.
The company also denied a report that the Chinese Red Cross was improperly charging hospital patients for blood. It said the Red Cross had no role in managing blood donations, only in assisting health authorities with publicity.
Sina said it has created a separate channel dubbed "Weibo Refutes Rumors" to spread denials of false information. It announced an email address for users to send reports of possible falsehoods.
China's online population is by far the world's biggest, with 485 million Internet users as of June 30, and is still growing rapidly, according to the government-sanctioned China National Internet Information Center.
That has created huge profit opportunities for Internet companies that comply with official controls, giving Beijing leverage to encourage cooperation and for private sector businesses to bear the cost of enforcing censorship.
Baidu Inc., which operates China's dominant search engine, says its profit for the three months ending in June rose 95 percent over a year earlier to $252.6 million.
Baidu's market share has grown since U.S.-based rival Google Inc. closed its China search engine last year after saying it no longer wanted to cooperate with censorship.
Sina, whose shares are traded on the U.S.-based Nasdaq stock market, reported a $10 million quarterly profit. That was down from $25.2 million for the same period of 2010 due to the costs of launching Weibo.
Another private company, Alibaba Group, has told merchants on its popular e-commerce platform Taobao to stop selling virtual private network and other software that can bypass Internet filters meant to block access to foreign websites deemed subversive or obscene.
Alibaba said last week it received no government orders and took the action after it found VPNs were being used to visit foreign websites illegally.
In a separate crackdown, the official Xinhua News Agency said Sunday that regulators have shut down 6,600 websites linked to companies that help clients delete unfavorable news items online or spread rumors to damage competitors.
Between April and June, authorities deleted more than 790,000 online posts and articles that contained illegal material, Xinhua said.
In one high-profile case, China's biggest milk producer, Mengniu Dairy Group Co., said last October that one of its managers had tried to boost his sales by spreading rumors online that a rival's infant formula might be dangerous.

PC gaming isn't dead. I think most of us realize this, but for the doubters, here's a rather expensive (but awesome-looking!) new piece of hardware from Razer which the company seems to believe will act as some kind of savior. The Razer Blade is a gaming laptop with an aluminum chassis and some lovely components.
This laptop will be available in Q4 2011 for $2799.99. Click here to see it glow. Many of us have always laughed at the idea of a "gaming laptop" -- do we finally have one up to the task? Either way, I'm really digging the "Switchblade UI."

TORONTO ? Research in Motion launched a new service Thursday that allows BlackBerry users to share music with friends.
BBM Music allows BlackBerry users to select 50 songs from a catalog of millions of tracks for their own personal playlist, said Alistair Mitchell, RIM's vice president of BBM platform and integrated services. BBM users can share songs from that list with friends who use the instant messenger service.
"By threading the culture, the immediacy and the trusted contacts that (make up) BBM with music we thought we could create a really compelling, unique experience," said Mitchell.
"Through BBM Music I can find out in real time what music matters to my friends ... I'm seeing music bubble up that I wouldn't even had thought about, or it's reminding me about music from my college days."
Users will pay US$4.99 a month for the BBM Music service. A closed trial run of the service began in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. Thursday, leading up to a wide release in 18 countries overall later this year.
RIM is hoping the program will leverage the 45 million BBM users to help the Waterloo, Ontario-based company to compete with its rivals, Apple's iPhones and Google Android devices.
"More than 45 million customers already love the social communication benefits delivered through BBM and we are thrilled to be extending the experience into a uniquely social and interactive music service," said Mike Lazaridis, RIM president and co-CEO.
RIM said music can be saved to smartphones to listen to while offline and users can keep track of how many friends are listening to your tracks.
"A major component of online music continues to be about community, and the ability to discover new artists and music through word of mouth," Rob Wells, president of Global Digital Business for Universal Music Group said in a statement.
At a time when RIM is struggling to produce phones that can compete with the dominant players in the market, well-designed software products that make the BlackBerry cooler to use are exactly what the company needs, says Sidneyeve Matrix, a professor of media and mass communications at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
"They never have cool stuff, they don't need 20 new phones, they need excellent services and software ? desperately," says Matrix.
And it's smart for the company to be leveraging BBM ? its biggest strength with young people ? any way it can, she adds.
"My students are ... 18 to 22 and BBM is an extension of their self, it's always on, it's like the backbone of college culture. Everybody's got BBM," Matrix says.
Some tech blogs came out swinging after RIM made its announcement, making unfavorable comparisons with other music services like Rdio and Spotify, which charge $10 a month but have no song limits.
"RIM Launches Inexplicable BBM Music App," wrote TechCrunch, while Gizmodo headlined its story: "BlackBerry's BBM Music Is The Dumbest Music Service I've Ever Heard Of."
But Mitchell said RIM was trying to create a different service and the limited number of songs allowed per profile was strategic.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Brent crude edged lower on Monday in choppy trading as investors hoped the process to restart oil exports from OPEC member Libya would begin soon as the country's six-month-old civil war neared an end.
Brent pared losses, bouncing with rallying U.S. crude on the day the September contract expired as rising Wall Street equities provided a boost.
Brent crude's forward curve flattened in the months through early next year and its premium to U.S. crude fell on hopes that a swift end to Libya's civil war would bring the country's oil exports back to the market.
Some output will be able to restart in a few months, but it will take as long as 18 months to reach prewar levels, Libya's former top oil official Shokri Ghanem said.
Muammar Gaddafi was a hunted man as remnants of his forces made a last-ditch stand in Libya's capital.
"While the Libyan leadership could be in the state of flux for several more days or even a few weeks, developments thus far strongly suggest a return of Libyan exports to the global market place," Jim Ritterbusch, president at Ritterbusch & Associates in Galena, Illinois, said in a note.
U.S. crude prices had an early boost from dollar weakness before the U.S. currency recovered as the euro fell back. The dollar had been pressured on speculation that the Federal Reserve this week might indicate a need to take additional measures to support an ailing economy.
U.S. equities also seesawed, slipping early, bouncing and pushing higher, then ending little changed as investors remained cautious after recent sharp declines.
Brent October crude fell 26 cents to settle at $108.36 a barrel, having bounced off a $105.15 low. Brent also had technical support from its intraday recovery back above its 200-day moving average of $107.91.
U.S. expiring September crude rose $1.86 to settle at $84.12 a barrel, having recovered from $81.13. More actively traded October crude rose $2.01 to settle at $84.42 a barrel.
Brent's premium to U.S. crude narrowed to below $24 a barrel, after reaching a record $26.69 on Friday.
U.S. crude trading volumes slightly outpaced Brent. Both topped 500,000 lots traded and Brent surpassed its 30-day average.
Part of U.S. crude divergence from Brent is because traders are starting to bail out of their Brent/U.S. spread positions, said Dominick Chirichella of the Energy Management Institute.
Brent's premium to U.S. crude, partially blamed on the glut of crude at the Cushing, Oklahoma, hub, may linger as the effort to build a pipeline to move crude to the refinery-rich Houston area stalls.
Enterprise Products Partners' cancellation last week of a joint venture pipeline with Energy Transfer Partners due to lack of shipper commitment was the first casualty in the race to build a pipeline.
Before the war cut Libya's output, the country pumped around 1.6 million barrels per day. Most of Libya's high-quality crude went to European refiners. After Libyan exports ceased, tighter supply sent Brent to a two-year high of $127.02 in April.
"The limited resistance to rebel forces entering Tripoli may herald a swift resolution to the civil war, opening the potential for the resumption of Libyan oil exports by the end of 2011," JPMorgan said in a note to clients.
Ahead of weekly reports from industry and government on U.S. oil inventories, a preliminary survey of analysts on Monday yielded a forecast for crude stocks to have fallen slightly last week.
Hurricane Irene, the first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic season, was expected to hit Florida but projected to turn away from the concentrations of production and refineries to the west.
ECONOMIC CONCERNS REMAIN
The sputtering global economy had investors awaiting any indications of central bank intent on stimulus at a gathering of policymakers and other financial leaders in Wyoming later this week.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will make a speech on Friday at a lodge in Wyoming's Jackson Hole, where policymakers and academics meet once a year.

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) ? The husband of a woman accused of tossing her disabled 7-month-old son off the fourth story of a hospital parking structure said Wednesday that his wife suffered from postpartum depression and he doesn't blame her for her actions.
The baby, Noe Medina Jr., died of his injuries earlier in the day at the University of California, Irvine, Medical Center, the same day that his mother was charged with murder and felony child abuse.
Sonia Hermosillo, 31, made a brief court appearance but did not enter a plea. She is due back in court Thursday.
Prosecutors allege that Hermosillo removed a helmet that her son wore for a medical condition before tossing him from the parking structure at Children's Hospital of Orange County. She then went back inside the hospital to validate her parking before driving away late Monday, senior deputy district attorney Scott Simmons said.
Hermosillo's husband, Noe Medina, said in an emotional press conference that he didn't blame his wife and urged women to get treatment if they think they might have postpartum depression.
He previously told The Orange County Register that his wife was deeply distraught because their son was diagnosed with congenital muscular torticollis ? a twisting of the neck to one side ? and wore a helmet to help correct his plagiocephaly, also known as flat-head syndrome.
He had been receiving treatment at Children's Hospital but did not have an appointment the day of the incident.
"My wife was not in her five senses. She didn't know what she was doing," Medina said, choking back tears. "I don't know if many people know what postpartum depression is, but in reality it is something very serious and needs to be treated."
Simmons said Hermosillo's behavior showed she intended to kill her son, regardless of her mental state.
"It's not like she's in a fetal position when the police arrived," he said. "She picks a specific location, drives to the top of the building (and) takes the helmet off. I'm sure she's depressed, the post-partum blues, I'm sure she had some of that."
"It's going to be up to a jury to decide if she had the wherewithal to inform the intent to kill."
Hermosillo's arraignment has been postponed until Sept. 16. Orange County Superior Court Judge Joe Perez set bail at $1 million, but federal immigration officials have a no-bail hold to keep her in custody because she is in the U.S. illegally, said Jim Amormino, sheriff's spokesman.
Hermosillo was being held in the medical ward, where she is receiving a psychological evaluation, he said. The Mexican national is being kept in a cell by herself and wearing a protective gown so she can't injure herself, he added.
The judge appointed a public defender for Hermosillo. The attorney did not comment after the hearing, which was conducted in a jailhouse courtroom and relayed to spectators on a closed-circuit TV.
Farrah Emami, a spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney's office, said prosecutors were not commenting on a motive.
"We're not going to speculate at this point as to why she may have done it. I don't think there will ever be a satisfactory answer as to why a mother would do something like this to her child," she said.
A witness on the ground saw the baby falling and several people, including a doctor, called 911, said Sgt. Dan Adams, a spokesman for Orange police.
Surveillance video showed Hermosillo's sport utility vehicle with an empty child seat leaving the parking structure a short time later, the sergeant said. The license plate was traced to Hermosillo's home.
During the investigation, La Habra police notified detectives that Medina had reported his wife and their son missing, Adams said.
An Orange police officer driving past Children's Hospital about four hours later spotted the SUV on a street about 100 yards from the crime scene and Hermosillo at the wheel, Adams said.
Both La Habra and Orange police agencies declined requests for the 911 tapes, citing the investigation.
County court records show Hermosillo has no major criminal record but pleaded guilty to four traffic violations in La Habra in 2008, including driving without a valid license and having no proof of insurance.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2011) ? Throughout the ages, fine art has been accorded a special significance and recognized as a powerful communication tool. Art has been used to sell everything from products to politics to religion.
But art can be stripped of its special status if used carelessly by advertisers, according to a new study by researchers from Boston College and the University of Houston.
If the artwork is viewed as a product-relevant illustration, then consumers no longer view it as art. Suddenly, they can take a critical view of its message, according to the new study, which will appear in a forthcoming issue of the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
"Art is valued for its own sake," said Henrik Hagtvedt, a marketing professor in the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. "If brands are associated with art in a tasteful way, consumers will accept and even appreciate it. But as soon as the artwork is viewed as a mere product-relevant illustration, it is demoted to the status of any other ordinary image."
Art may thus lose its unique powers of communication, Hagtvedt and colleague Vanessa M. Patrick, a professor of marketing of the University of Houston, found in three experiments in which art was presented on product labels and in advertisements.
One study conducted by Hagtvedt and Patrick involved a wine tasting at a bar. While tasting, the patrons also inspected the wine labels, which featured paintings by the French artist Renoir. For some customers, the bartender had been coached to comment that the bottle labels featured paintings. People who tasted these wines judged them all favorably.
For others, the bartender casually mentioned that the same wine label paintings depicted people. The patrons still judged the wine favorably if the label featured what seemed like an appropriate image, such as guests at a luncheon. But the same wine in a bottle labeled with an out-of-place image, such as a woman and child playing with toys, was received less favorably.
The findings reveal not only that wine labels can influence how wine tastes to consumers, but also that it matters how those consumers perceive the labels. Art causes wine to taste good, but only as long as it retains its status as art. This demonstrates some of the limits marketers face when using fine art to pitch their products.
"When people view an image as an artwork, it communicates as art and it doesn't matter whether the content fits," said Hagtvedt. "But when they start to focus on the content of the image, such as the people or their activities, then it becomes a product illustration and consumers begin to weigh whether it fits or not."
Two other experiments, in the context of advertising for soap or nail salons, replicated the pattern of results. Different images caused different product evaluations, but if the images were viewed as artworks rather than illustrations, then the products tended to be viewed in an equally favorable light.
The researchers suggest the responses reflect how humans have evolved to recognize and appreciate art as a special category of expression.
"People have evolved to care about art," said Hagtvedt. "It is something we have appreciated in all societies known to man, throughout history and pre-history. It is also a magnificent tool for marketers who rely on its communicative power in a thoughtful and honest manner, but those who use it thoughtlessly are not likely to impress anyone."

PARIS/TOKYO (Reuters) ? Shares of Nintendo Co Ltd surged more than 8 percent on Tuesday amid expectations the Japanese video game maker is taking steps to shore up lackluster sales of its 3DS handheld games player.
Dow Jones Newswires and other media reported that Nintendo would hold a trade show for its 3DS device next month in Tokyo, which caused some to speculate the firm will announce details on how it will improve sales of the 3D-capable device.
French technology website 01net also helped spur buying with a report the Kyoto-based company was developing a joystick for the 3DS while working on a new version of the games player for release next year.
The peripheral device would be aimed at overcoming the lack of a second analog joystick controller, widely seen as needed for a superior gaming experience, the website reported, citing a source close to the company.
Nintendo has also asked certain game developers to come up with new titles that would be specifically designed for a dual-controller game, the website added.
A Nintendo spokesman in Japan declined to comment on the reports.
Nintendo shares jumped 8.4 percent to close at 13,100 yen on the Osaka Securities Exchange.
"There is no investment decision behind the rise. There's an element of short-covering," said a trader at a European brokerage, adding that news of the 3DS trade show in Tokyo on September 13 helped fuel the stock's rally.
"People are expecting that there will be some announcement."
Nintendo launched the 3DS in February to fend off growing competition from other games companies, as well as makers of smartphones and tablets, but a limited selection of new software for the device led to lower-than-expected sales.
In July, Nintendo slashed its full-year profit forecast, after posting an operating loss in the April-June quarter, in part due to sluggish 3DS sales.
In a bid to lift sales, the company behind the Super Mario franchise cut the price of the 3DS by 40 percent to 15,000 yen ($195.39) in Japan and by nearly one-third in the United States to $169.99.
01net also cited various sources as saying that Nintendo was developing a replacement for the 3DS -- originally heralded for its ability to provide a three dimensional gaming experience without the use of external glasses -- which would de-emphasize the significance of 3D and be released sometime next year.

They?ve been in business for almost 20 years now, and have a staff of over 30 people. They consider their branding to be an important part of their business? development.
The Maid in the Shade logo, which they call ?broomy? has been a key element in their branding. The logo is of a smiling broom with sunglasses. Maid in the Shade wanted to emphasize that they were not just providing their clients with cleaning services, but giving them more quality time in their lives. Santa Fe, New Mexico (Reuters) ? Diego Romero, from New Mexico's Cochiti pueblo, spent months building pieces of pottery, melding traditional Native American art with his love of comic books to create a contemporary look at Indian culture.
Standing by his booth on a packed Santa Fe street, his thin, black hair tied in a braid down his back, and wearing shorts and sneakers, he showed a single shallow bowl with golden trim surrounding a painted image of corn dancers. A second bowl, an "historical piece" depicting the hanging of Native Americans by the conquering Spaniards, sold for $6,000 hours after it went on sale at the Santa Fe Indian market.
Romero said his highly sought after artwork chronicles time, history and human nature, integrating images of alcoholism, domestic abuse and exploitation of native culture, depicted like Greek mythical narratives embedded in clay.
"They're narratives of the human condition. We've all been in the bar with a broken heart, or broken down on the highway of life," he said.
The 47-year-old Berkeley-educated artist is one of more than 1,100 Native American artists gathered this weekend in Santa Fe for the largest Native arts market in the world. Produced by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), and considered the largest cultural event in the southwest, it brings together artists representing 100 U.S. Federally recognized tribes.
The event easily draws 100,000 visitors to Santa Fe's main square, including collectors, gallery owners, buyers and browsers from around the world, said Mark Trujillo, Indian Tourism program director for New Mexico.
First established in 1922 by the Museum of New Mexico as part of the Santa Fe Fiesta celebration, styles of artwork now include a range of jewelry, pottery, sculpture, baskets, paintings, wooden Kachina dolls, beadwork and more.
The emphasis is on quality and authenticity, said Association officials, citing its mission of bringing "Native arts to the world by inspiring artistic excellence, fostering education, and creating meaningful partnerships."
Generations of artists come together, many of whose family members have been participating for almost 90 years.
Jared Chavez, 28, recently joined his father, a well-known jeweler from San Felipe pueblo who has been selling his work at the Indian Market since 1976. Richard Chavez, 62, calls his son's decision to embrace the trade, "the best thing that has happened in our family."
Richard's bracelets, rings and other jewelry are notable for their unique inclusion of rare gems, collected from gem and mineral shows around the country. Fossilized Mammoth tusk, black and green jade, cut into sleek lines and inlaid into gold or silver backing make for extremely popular wares. Richard sells custom orders primarily to collectors or at the Indian Market once a year.
Jared Chavez has worked with jewelry ever since he was a boy, bored one summer, and eager for something to do. While Jared's designs veer from his father's with more textured surfaces and less inlaid stone, both adhere to sleek lines and quality work. Jared proudly points to his necklace laying nearby, which he made of silver and Botswana agate. It received a large second place red ribbon for best in show.
The Market is one of Santa Fe's most profitable weekends. A recent Association survey found that the Market feeds up to $100 million into the city's economy over the weekend, not to mention directly into the pockets of Native artists.
For Santo Domingo pueblo potter Robert Tenorio, Market earnings make up half of his annual income.
His stable of collectors return year after year for the hand crafted pottery. One collector from Florida has 60 of his pots and comes every year for more; another Santa Fe family has a "Robert Tenorio" room in their house, dedicated solely to his work, he said.
Tenorio's success comes from years of building a clientele. Now 60, he's been selling his pottery at the Market since he was ten years old. Before that, he joined his mother who came to sell jewelry. Tenorio has an exceptional number of first prize entries over the years -- "enough blue ribbons to make a quilt - a whole King sized bed!"
His notoriety is also due to his dedication to traditional methods and materials learned long ago from his grandmother.
"My pots can still look old, have the thousand year look, because I use grandmother's methods," he said.
The Indian Market has evolved and grown over the years -- this year for the first time Native Alaskan tribes are included. Throughout the weekend, there are vibrant Native costumes, stunning jewelry displays, feathered ceremonial headdresses, drumming, singing and native dances, preceded by a series of Native films, lectures and visual arts events.
DeArmond Williams, 43, a pueblo Indian raised east of Santa Fe who used to work at the Market, flew in from North Carolina to see old friends.
"As Native People a lot of friends are far away. This is a gathering of all those people," he said.
