PARIS ? A French judicial official says oil giant Total, its chief executive and 17 other people will stand trial in a case of alleged corruption linked to the scandal-ridden United Nations oil-for-food program for Iraq.
The official said the trial of Total CEO Christophe Margerie, senator and former Interior Minister Charles Pasqua and others is expected to take place next year, though a date hasn't been set.
The official said Tuesday the case was ordered to trial Thursday ? despite Paris prosecutors' recommendation in October that the charges be dropped. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to office protocol.
Total has insisted it abided by the rules of the U.N program, which started in the 1990s and allowed Saddam Hussein to sell oil in exchange for humanitarian goods.
