Prostate cancer is the number two killer of American men, second only to lung cancer. It is a disease that affects more than 2 million American men, and in 2010 there were over 218,000 new diagnoses. It is a disease that kills, but even for those who survive it, the world is never quite the same. Issues such as impotence, urinary incontinence and depression are common after-effects of prostate cancer, and until now there were few resources for those facing these hurdles for the first time.

In AFTER PROSTATE CANCER: A What-Comes-Next Guide to a Safe and Informed Recovery, Dr. Arnold Melman offer his expertise in helping men through their emotionally and physically exhausting recovery process. Assisting in this task is Rosemary Newnham, a professional writer with a background in medical writing and oral history. Together, they give men who have survived this harrowing experience strategies for healthfully approaching post-therapy issues.

Included in the book are real stories and experiences from prostate cancer survivors, as well as accessible information from the most up-to-date medical literature. In addition to being a helpful guide for survivors, AFTER PROSTATE CANCER is also a tool for family members; for the wives, children, and friends of those who have gone through so much. In the same way that pink ribbon culture has been enriched by husbands of breast cancer survivors, blue ribbon culture can benefit from well informed wives.

For anyone who didn't expect to live through the disease, or simply didn't know what awaited them on the other side, AFTER PROSTATE CANCER is a useful tool in managing the day-to-day. The hardest part is over. What comes next?
