Kerry says U.S. seeks faster Syria political transition

PARIS (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that the United States hoped to find ways to speed up a political transition in Syria and would discuss ideas at a Friends of Syria meeting in Rome on Friday.

"We are examining and developing ways to accelerate the transition the Syrian people seek and deserve," Kerry told a news conference with his French counterpart Laurent Fabius in Paris before travelling on to Rome.

The Washington Post has reported that the White House was considering a shift in policy toward the nearly two-year-long conflict in Syria, and may send the rebels body armour and armed vehicles, and possibly provide military training. According to the report, U.S. officials still oppose providing arms.

Wary of crises, Americans tune out budget cut talk

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is pulling out all the stops to warn just what could happen if automatic budget cuts kick in. Americans are reacting with a collective yawn.

They know the shtick: Obama raises the alarm, Democrats and Republicans accuse each other of holding a deal hostage, there's a lot of yelling on cable news, and then finally, when everyone has made their points, a deal is struck and the day is saved.

Maybe not this time. Two days before $85 billion in cuts are set to hit federal programs with all the precision of a wrecking ball, there are no signs that the White House and Republicans in Congress are even negotiating. Both sides appear quietly resigned to the prospect that this is one bullet we just may not dodge.

Still, for all the grim predictions, Americans seem to be flipping the channel to something a little less, well, boring. They wonder, haven't we been here before?

It's like deja vu, says Patrick Naylon, who runs an audiovisual firm in San Francisco: "The same stuff, over and over again."

Texas native Corby Biddle, 53, isn't losing sleep over the cuts. No way the government will let vital services collapse, he said as he visited tourist attractions this week in downtown Atlanta.

"It will get resolved. They will kick the can down the road," Biddle said.

Usually, that's exactly what happens. Even the cuts behind the current panic were originally supposed to kick in on Jan. 1 ? part of the fiscal-cliff combo of spending cuts and tax hikes that economists warned could nudge the nation back into recession. For all the high drama, lawmakers finally acted on New Year's Day, compromising on taxes and punting the spending cuts to March 1.

And the blunt instrument known as the "sequester" that's set to deliver the cuts? That too was the progeny of another moment of government-by-brinksmanship, a concession that in 2011 made possible the grand bargain that saved the U.S. from a first-ever default on its debt.

Even if the current cuts go through, the impact won't be immediate. Federal workers would be notified next week that they will have to take up to a day every week off without pay, but the furloughs won't start for a month due to notification requirements. That will give negotiators some breathing room to keep working on a deal.

But you can only cry wolf so many times before people just stop paying attention.

"I know you guys must get tired of it," Obama told a crowd in Virginia on Tuesday. "Didn't we just solve this thing? Now we've got another thing coming up?"

Three out of 4 Americans say they aren't following the spending cuts issue very closely, according to a Pew Research Center poll released this week. It's a significant drop from the nearly 4 in 10 who in December said they were closely following the fiscal-cliff debate.

Public data from Google's search engine shows that at its peak in December, the search term "fiscal cliff" was about 10 times as popular as "sequestration" has been in recent days. Even "debt ceiling," not a huge thriller for the web-surfing crowd, maxed out in July 2011 at about three times the searches the sequester is now getting.

"We're now approaching the next alleged deadline of doom. And voters, having been told previously that the world might end, found it did not in the past and are becoming more skeptical that it will in the future," said Peter Brown of the nonpartisan Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

And let's face it: When it comes to policy issues that can really put an audience to sleep, "sequestration" is right up there with filibuster reform, chained CPI and carried interest.

For all the angst about layoffs, furloughs and slashes to government contracts, the markets don't seem to be rattled, either. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, after falling below 13,000 at the height of the fiscal cliff debacle, has been buoyant ever since, spending the last month hovering just below 14,000.

"I shrug my shoulders because I don't believe any of those severe cuts will go through," said Karen Jensen, a retired hospital administrator who stopped to talk in New York's Times Square. "Life goes on as it has before."

But if the Obama administration hasn't managed to convince Americans these spending cuts could be the real deal, it's not for lack of trying.

Each day the cuts grow nearer sees a new dire warning from the White House about another government function that will take a hit if they go into effect ? what White House chief of staff Denis McDonough has called a "devastating list of horribles." Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday that her agency will be forced to furlough 5,000 border patrol agents. Education Secretary Arne Duncan has said 70,000 preschool kids could be removed from Head Start. Fewer air traffic controllers could mean 90-minute delays or longer in major cities, and visiting hours at all 398 national parks are likely to be cut, the administration has said.

The White House has circulated 51 reports ? one for each state, plus the District of Columbia ? localizing the effects of the cuts. On Tuesday, Obama took his cautionary tale to a shipbuilding site in Newport News, Va., calling attention to how the cuts could impede the military. The White House says in Virginia alone, about 90,000 civilians working for the Defense Department would be furloughed, for a nearly $650 million reduction in gross pay.

"The president needs to stop campaigning, stop trying to scare the American people, stop trying to scare the states," Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana said Monday after governors from both parties met with Obama behind closed doors. "Now's the time to cut spending. It can be done without jeopardizing the economy. It can be done without jeopardizing critical services."

The age-old Republican desire for a scaled-back federal government makes it clear why, on the one hand, the GOP isn't scrambling to avert the cuts ? especially when Obama insists on more tax revenues in any deal to turn them off. On the other hand, Obama is banking on polls that show if the cuts go through, Republicans are likely to bear most of the blame.

Both parties agree that if you're going to cut spending, an indiscriminate mechanism like the sequester is the wrong way to do it. After all, the whole point of the endeavor was to set in motion ramifications so unbearable that lawmakers would be forced to come together and hash out a better plan before the deadline.

Count James Ford of Louisville, Ky., among those still holding out hope.

"They'll come up with something to keep the thing going," he said. "They always do."

(AP) ? The quiet of this seaside community erupted in violence Tuesday when two detectives investigating a sex crime were fatally shot while trying to question a man who was later killed in a police shootout, leaving the chief to call it the darkest day in the department's history.

Sgt. Loren Butch Baker and detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed during an altercation at the home of the coffee shop worker, according to police and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's office.

They were shot while following up on allegations that barista Jeremy Goulet, 35, made inappropriate sexual advances on a co-worker at her home, authorities said. Goulet was arrested Friday and was fired the next day, The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported.

Baker, a 28-year veteran of the force, and Butler, a 10-year veteran, had gone to the house where Goulet was living to follow up on the case, authorities said. They were subsequently fired upon and called for backup, and responding officers found Goulet, who was killed in the gunfire that followed, the sheriff's office said.

"There aren't words to describe this horrific tragedy," said Police Chief Kevin Vogel. "This is the darkest day in the history of the Santa Cruz police department."

The shootings prompted the lockdown of two schools and an automatic police call to nearby residents, warning them to stay locked inside. The ordinarily quiet residential neighborhood echoed with a brief barrage of gunfire that killed the suspect about a half hour after the officers were shot.

A store clerk a few buildings from the shooting said the shootout was "terrifying."

"We ducked. We have big desks so under the desks we went," said the clerk, who spoke on condition of anonymity and asked that her store not be identified because she feared for her safety.

After the shootings, police went door-to-door in the neighborhood, searching homes, garages, even closets, to determine whether there might be additional suspects. Law enforcement officers filled intersections, and helicopters and light aircraft patrolled the neighborhood about a mile from downtown Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The city's mayor, Hilary Bryant, said in a statement that the community about 60 miles south of San Francisco was "heartbroken at the loss of two of our finest police officers who were killed in the line of duty, protecting the community we love."

"This is an exceptionally shocking and sad day for Santa Cruz and our police department," Bryant said.

Goulet, a barista at a coffee shop in the Santa Cruz harbor, was previously convicted in Portland, Ore., in May 2008 of peeping on a 22-year-old woman who was showering in her condominium and of carrying concealed weapon, according to a Portland newspaper, The Oregonian. He was on probation but was sentenced to two years in jail after a dispute with his probation officer.

The shootings came amid a recent spike in assaults, which community leaders had planned to address in a downtown rally scheduled for Tuesday. That, along with a City Council meeting, was canceled after teary-eyed city leaders learned of the deaths.

The recent violence included the killing of a 32-year-old martial arts instructor who was shot outside a popular downtown bar and restaurant; the robbery of a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was shot in the head; a 21-year-old woman who was raped and beaten on the UC campus; and a couple who fought off two men during a home invasion.

Stocks climb higher in midday trading

Stocks added to their gains Wednesday, with the S&P 500 climbing back above 1,500 and the Dow clawing back above 14,000, lifted by a batch of upbeat earnings and following a cheery pending home sales report.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced, led by JPMorgan and Boeing, after posting a triple-digit gain in the previous session.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also added to their gains. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, fell below 15.

All 10 key S&P sectors turned higher, led by materials and industrials.

"We're in a sideways process with the Dow around 14,000 and we'll probably be around here for a while," said Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial. "Profit and economic growth may be softer in Europe and we're probably due for a pullback, but I don't think it's going to be a big one. You want to buy into the dips and put capital to work."

On the economic front, pending home sales jumped 4.5 percent in January to 105.9, according to the National Association of Realtors, hitting its highest since April 2010. Economists in a Reuters survey expected a 1.5 percent gain compared with a 4.3 percent drop in the previous month.

Weekly mortgage applications declined for a third-consecutive week even as rates eased, according to the the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Durable goods orders declined 5.2 percent in January after gaining 4.3 percent in the prior month, according to the Commerce Department. But excluding transportation, durable goods orders increased 1.9 percent, the biggest gain since December 2011.

Flower Foods spiked after the packaged bakery goods company won the bid for Hostess' Wonder bread in a deal worth $360 million, CNBC learned.

In a busy day for retail earnings, Target posted quarterly results that topped expectations for the holiday quarter. But shares gave up their initial gains amid investor concern over the company's ability to reach its forecast, given its large-scale expansion plans in Canada.

Dollar Tree soared to lead the S&P 500 gainers after the discount retailer posted earnings and revenue that edged past expectations.

And TJX reported quarterly results that beat Wall Street expectations. In addition, the company announced a dividend hike and a new share repurchase program.

Coach jumped amid unconfirmed reports that the upscale retailer is exploring a sale of itself. Separately, the retailer said it has hired a former Nike executive to oversee the transformation of its stores.

Apple dipped ahead of the company's shareholders meeting. Shares gained in the previous session amid speculation the iPhone maker could announce plans to enhance shareholder value. Still, the stock has plunged more than 35 percent since hitting an all-time high of $705 back in September and has been trading below its 50-day moving average for nearly five months.

First Solar plunged nearly 15 percent after the solar panel maker posted revenue and outlook that fell short of Wall Street expectations. In addition, Baird cut its rating on the company to "neutral" from "outperform" and lowered its price target to $25 from $30.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke appeared before the House Financial Services Committee in his second day of testimony.

On Tuesday, Bernanke Bernanke said the Fed will continue its quantitative easing (QE) program until clear signs of an economic recovery are visible and also urged lawmakers to avoid sharp spending cuts due to kick in at the beginning of March.

"There was little in the way of surprise yesterday by Chairman Bernanke who, as expected, gave a stern defense of QE as an important monetary policy tool in the current crisis," wrote Derek Halpenny, European head of global markets research at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.

European shares closed higher, thanks to a successful bond auction in Italy.

Earlier in the day, Anheuser-Busch Inbev forecast a weak start to the year in the U.S. and Brazil, after posting slightly lower-than-expected earnings in the fourth quarter of 2012. The Belgian brewer is the world's biggest beer maker and produces Budweiser and Stella Artois.

Meanwhile, Franco-German defense firm EADS predicted higher profits in 2013 as it confirmed an upswing in 2012, driven by efforts to cut costs, and strong deliveries of passenger jets. EADS shares rose by around five percent on the news. U.S. rival Boeing posted results in January that also topped expectations.

(AP) ? Orders for U.S. factory goods that signal business investment plans jumped last month by the most in more than a year, suggesting companies are confident about their business prospects.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that orders for so-called core capital goods, which include industrial machinery, construction equipment and computers, rose 6.3 percent in January from December. A sharp fall in demand for commercial aircraft caused overall durable goods orders to drop 5.2 percent, the first decline since August.

Orders for commercial aircraft are volatile from month to month and can cause large swings in the overall figure. Boeing reported orders for only two planes in January, down from 183 in December. Orders for defense equipment also plummeted by the most in more than 12 years.

Durable goods are items expected to last at least three years.

The increase in core capital goods suggests companies are willing to expand their production capacities despite worries that automatic government spending cuts will slow the economy in the coming months.

"The fact remains that capital spending appears to be holding up very well," Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG, a brokerage firm. "In fact, it appears to be accelerating."

Still, the jump in orders wasn't broad-based and occurred mostly in machinery and manufactured metal products. Orders for computers and communications equipment both fell and orders for autos and auto parts were unchanged.

And even with the increase, orders have mostly just recovered last year's losses. Total core capital goods orders reached $67.7 billion in January, just above December 2011's level.

Several economists warned that orders were likely to fall in the coming months after such a big gain.

"We don't expect businesses suddenly to throw caution to the wind," Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients.

About $85 billion in spending cuts are scheduled to kick in Friday and there is little sign that the White House and Congress will reach a deal to avoid them. Defense Department officials may have slowed purchases in January in anticipation of the cutbacks.

Business investment plans have held up in recent months despite the uncertainty surrounding tax and spending policies. Core capital goods orders dipped 0.3 percent in December but posted strong gains of 3.3 percent in November and 3 percent in October.

The report suggests U.S. manufacturing is strengthening. The Institute for Supply Management said earlier this month that factory activity grew in January at the fastest pace in nine months. Measures of new orders and hiring both rose.

But industrial production fell in January after two months of increases, the Federal Reserve said. Much of the decline reflected a big drop in auto production that was likely temporary. The auto industry is coming off its best year for sales in five years. Sales continue to rise, so production will likely rebound in February.

Shooting at South Carolina university wounds one

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - A 19-year-old student died following a shooting on Tuesday at a residence hall of a South Carolina university near the resort area of Myrtle Beach, and authorities were searching for a gunman, university officials said.

Anthony Liddell, a sophomore from Bennettsville, South Carolina, died following the shooting at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, the university said in a statement.

The shooting occurred just before 7:30 p.m. at University Place, an apartment-style residence hall that is home to nearly 2,000 students.

Residence halls would remain on lockdown throughout the night, but the gunman was believed to have fled campus, school officials said. Classes will be held Wednesday, the statement said.

"The suspect fled in a vehicle. The campus is still on lockdown, although people in classrooms were allowed to go home. Those in dorms were advised to stay inside," said Mona Prufer, a university spokeswoman.

Conway police gave no information on the motive for the shooting and referred questions to state police, which did not return phone calls.

The nation remains on edge over gun violence following the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in December, in which 20 children and six adults were shot and killed.

That rampage reignited a broad national debate over gun control and prompted President Barack Obama to push Congress to pass tighter gun restrictions.

More than 9,000 students attend Coastal Carolina University, which was founded in 1954 as Coastal Carolina Junior College and became an independent university in 1993.

Counselors and ministers will provide assistance on Wednesday to students at a campus chapel and at residence halls, the university said.

Pruksa Real Estate - The Nation

Bualuang Securities February 26, 2013 3:16 pm

Pruksa Real Estate Plc (PS)

In line with our estimate

PS reported a 4Q12 net profit of Bt1.25bn, up by 270% YoY and 25% QoQ. The result was in line with our model, but 9% above the street number, due to higher revenue and lower SG&A expenses than assumed by the street.

The firm announced an FY12 DPS of Bt0.50, as expected (a 1.5% yield). XD on March 12; payment on May 17.

Results highlights

PS was the worst affected by the 4Q11 flooding of the ResDev stocks we cover. As such, the strong YoY earnings growth for 4Q12 was flattered to some extent by the low base comparison. Nevertheless, housing revenue jumped 79% YoY to Bt8.4bn, the firm's best top-line since 4Q09, while the SG&A/sales ratio dropped 8.4% YoY to 11.2%. Housing GM declined by 2.8% YoY to 32.3% in 4Q12. On a QoQ basis, earnings growth was led by housing revenue, which rose 16%, and a lower SG&A/sales ratio fall of 4.5%. However, housing GM fell from 34.1% in 3Q12 to 32.3% in 4Q12. The balance sheet strengthened?the net gearing ratio dipped from 0.90x at end-Sept to 0.84x at YE12 (the lowest leverage since YE10).

Outlook

We expect 1Q13 net profit to post YoY growth but a QoQ decline. Low-rise revenue will dominate the top-line for the quarter. PS will start transferring Plum Nawamin (Bt632m; 91percent sold) and Condolette Light (Bt650m; 81percent sold) in March 2013. Management guides that the NMs for the two condos are strong at 16.3percent for Plum and 17.2percent for Condolette.

What's changed?

We maintain our projection unchanged. Revenue visibility is clear?the presales backlog at end-Jan 2013 secured 78% of our FY13 forecast. Low-rise presales were strong in January at Bt1.7bn, far above the monthly low-rise presales for 1Q12 of Bt1bn. Our FY13 model is 9% ahead of the consensus. Proof of a low-rise presales recovery should prompt a consensus earnings forecast upgrade.

Recommendation

Our BUY rating stands with a YE13 target price upgrade to Bt38 (from Bt31.50), as we have re-rated our PER peg to 15x from 12.5x (1.7SDs above its FY06-12 mean). PS trades at cheap FY13 PEG of 0.3x (0.6x for the sector). The scope for a valuation re-rating is wide open, as the stock previously traded at a PER of 17.8x (2SDs above its mean) in 2010. This year, PS will resume strong presales growth of 21% and revenue expansion of 26%. Profitability ratios will improve with high condo NM (an 18.3% mean) to be realized in FY13. Besides, low-rise margin should improve this year, as PS offered price promotions last year in order to clear inventory following the 4Q11 flooding.

Benedict to be called 'emeritus pope,' wear white

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Two pontiffs, both wearing white, both called "pope" and living a few yards from one another, with the same key aide serving them.

The Vatican's announcement Tuesday that Pope Benedict XVI will be known as "emeritus pope" in his retirement, be called "Your Holiness" and continue to wear the white cassock associated with the papacy has fueled concerns about potential conflicts arising from the peculiar reality now facing the Catholic Church: having one reigning and one retired pope.

Benedict's title and what he will wear have been a major source of speculation since the 85-year-old pontiff stunned the world and announced he would resign Thursday, the first pope to do so in 600 years.

There has been good reason why popes haven't stepped down in past centuries, given the possibility for divided allegiances and even schism. But the Vatican insists that while the situation created by Benedict's retirement is certainly unique, no major conflicts will arise.

"According to the evolution of Catholic doctrine and mentality, there is only one pope. Clearly it's a new situation, but I don't think there will be problems," Giovanni Maria Vian, the editor of the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, said in an interview.

Critics aren't so sure. Some Vatican-based cardinals have privately grumbled that it will make it more difficult for the next pope with Benedict still around.

Swiss theologian Hans Kueng, Benedict's one-time colleague-turned-critic, went further: "With Benedict XVI, there is a risk of a shadow pope who has abdicated but can still indirectly exert influence," he told Germany's Der Spiegel magazine last week.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Tuesday that Benedict himself decided on his name and wardrobe in consultation with others, settling on "Your Holiness Benedict XVI" and either "emeritus pope" or "emeritus Roman pontiff."

Lombardi said he didn't know why Benedict had decided to drop his other main title: bishop of Rome.

In the two weeks since Benedict's resignation announcement, Vatican officials had suggested that Benedict would likely resume wearing the traditional black garb of a cleric and would use the title "emeritus bishop of Rome" to avoid creating confusion with the future pope.

Adding to the concern is that Benedict's trusted secretary, Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, will be serving both pontiffs ? living with Benedict at the monastery being converted for him inside Vatican grounds while keeping his day job as prefect of the new pope's household.

Asked about the potential for conflict, Lombardi was defensive, saying the decisions had been clearly reasoned and were likely chosen for the sake of simplicity.

"I believe it was well thought out," he said.

Benedict himself has made clear he is retiring to a lifetime of prayer and meditation "hidden from the world." However, he still will be very present in the tiny Vatican city-state, where his new home is right next door to the Vatican Radio transmission tower and has a lovely view of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.

Kueng said it was a mistake for Gaenswein to serve both men and for Benedict to remain so close to the center of action.

"No priest likes it if his predecessor sits next to the rectory and watches everything he does," Kueng was quoted as saying in Der Spiegel. "And even for the bishop of Rome, it is not pleasant if his predecessor constantly has an eye on him."

However, others reasoned that Benedict's retirement plans and title were in keeping with those of other retired heads of state.

"I was somewhat surprised that Benedict would still be called 'His Holiness' and would wear white, but it's akin to the former U.S. presidents being addressed as 'Mr. President,'" said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit writer and editor. "It's a mark of respect for the former office he once held."

"Overall, I don't think that after the conclave there will be any doubt about who the pope is, or who is in charge," he said.

While Benedict will no longer wear his trademark red shoes, he has taken a liking to a pair of hand-crafted brown loafers made for him by artisans in Leon, Mexico, and given to him during his 2012 visit. He will wear those in retirement, Lombardi said.

Lombardi also elaborated on the College of Cardinals meetings that will take place after the papacy becomes vacant ? crucial gatherings in which cardinals will discuss the problems facing the church and set a date for the start of the conclave to elect Benedict's successor.

The first meeting isn't expected until Monday, Lombardi said, since the official convocation to cardinals to come to Rome will only go out on Friday ? the first day of what's known as the "sede vacante," or the vacancy between papacies.

In all, 115 cardinals under the age of 80 are expected in Rome for the conclave to vote on who should become the next pope. Two other eligible cardinals have already said they are not coming, one from Britain and another from Indonesia. Cardinals who are 80 and older can join the College meetings but won't participate in the conclave or vote.

Benedict has already given the cardinals the go-ahead to move up the start date of the conclave ? tossing out the traditional 15-day waiting period. But the cardinals won't be able to set a date until their official meetings begin Monday.

Lombardi also described Benedict's final 48 hours as pope: On Tuesday, he was packing, arranging for documents to be sent to the various Vatican archives and separating out the personal papers he will take with him into retirement.

On Wednesday, Benedict holds his final public general audience in St. Peter's Square ? an event that has already brought in 50,000 ticket requests. He won't greet visiting prelates or VIPs as he normally does, but will meet some visiting leaders ? from Slovakia, San Marino, Andorra and his native Bavaria ? privately afterward.

On Thursday, the pope meets with his cardinals in the morning and then flies by helicopter at 5 p.m. to Castel Gandolfo, the papal residence south of Rome. Benedict will greet parishioners there from the palazzo's balcony ? his final public act as pope.

Then, at 8 p.m., the exact time at which his retirement becomes official, the Swiss Guards standing outside the doors of the palazzo at Castel Gandolfo will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church finished.

Benedict's personal security will be assured by Vatican police, Lombardi said.

What is The Big Mac Index?

by Jason Jenkins, Investment U Research
Tuesday, February 26, 2013

?Fun? and ?a loose gauge? are just some of the descriptions given to The
Economist?s Big Mac Index.

However, since its invention in 1986, you can see on the internet that a whole cottage industry has sprung up from this concept. At first, it was to find that ideal arbitrage trade.

But investors should take the Big Mac Index for what it was intended to be ? a talking point.

Currency Trading 101

Here?s a little economic talk for you so you can an idea of what?s going on. The perfect arbitrage trade is the synchronized buy and sell of an asset so you can make some money from the difference in price. What you are attempting to do is take advantage of price differences in similar investment vehicles. Arbitrage comes about due to market inefficiencies. It helps makes sure that there aren?t large price variations for fair value over the long term.

Now enter technology.

As advanced and fast as trading systems are now, its hard to take advantage of mispriced assets. A lot of traders have systems to check on currency fluctuations. But if they do occur, it?s usually gone within moments. Given the advancement in technology it has become extremely difficult to profit from mispricing in the market.

So the purpose of the Big Mac Index was to gauge the percentage of overvaluation and/or undervaluation between two currencies in two different countries by using the price of an actual Big Mac. Why a Big Mac? You have to love the world?s appetite for fast food. Big Macs are sold in nearly 120 countries becoming a standard consumer good. Then, take the U.S. dollar through the Federal Reserve?s trade-weighted average and use that as your base. Now you can use the formula of purchasing power parity to determine if currencies are over or undervalued.

So What is Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)?

Please bare with me. Only a little more of all this academic economic currency talk.

Think of PPP as a simple equation. Let?s look at it step by step:

  • First of all find the price of a Big Mac in the country you are attempting to value in its local currency.
  • Next, find the price of a Big Mac in U.S. dollars.
  • PPP is the price of the Big Mac in the initial country divided by the price of a Big Mac in U.S. dollars.

If you take this number and divide it by the Federal Reserve?s trade-weighted average, you get the exchange rate. In essence, the exchange rate gives you the percentage of under- or overvaluation of a currency. The exchange rate adjusts so that the same good in two different countries will be the same price when put in the same currency.

As we all know, just because its in a book or taught in a classroom, it doesn?t mean that it will happen in real life. Research shows that in the short-term you?ll never reach a parity because of an insufficient time duration. Over the long-term, parity may never be reached because of things like Central Banks purposefully undervaluing their currency. Think of China. Its an export dependent nation and undervaluing the currency also allows them to earn more in foreign reserves.

With more emerging markets increasing prominence on the world scene, you?ll see more of this so they may be more competitive in the world market.

And there are so many other differences that go into prices

If only it was this simple to figure out what?s going on in different currencies. And that?s why the Big Mac Index is always talked about in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Look at all the different factors that could go into pricing that would differ from country to country:

  • The trade-weighted average can remain constant over a long period of time. The prices of a Big Mac are market driven. If this is the case, then the Index becomes severely flawed.
  • The prices of Big Macs may fluctuate throughout individual countries.
  • Different taxation systems could affect how the same product is priced. This would especially be the case in countries that have implemented value-added taxation systems.
  • Inflation varies between countries.
  • Different countries will pay different costs for goods and commodities. This will skew the Index.
  • The price of labor and possible trade restrictions between countries will also skew the Big Mac Index over the long-term.
  • Cultural or religious reasons will affect how Big Macs are received in different countries. Along those lines, there may be sharp differences in countries dependent upon its make-up of rural and urban areas.
  • And finally, we could discuss countries experiencing financial crisis or in the midst of military conflict.

So What Can We Take Out of The Big Mac Index?

Well, a hamburger may be able to tell you a little about the global economy. Better yet, it?s a way to look at similar countries with similar economies.

I just mentioned all the differences that can affect the Index. Yet it may tell you some things if you compare countries with similar make-up and development.

It can be a means to gauge changes in worker wages/productivity globally and to see if currencies are where they should be.

Ryan Avent, chief economist at The Economist, explains how they use it:

?When you look at a country like India or Mexico, labor there is much cheaper than it is in the U.S. or in Europe. And that really has to do with productivity differences?so one thing we?re measuring is productivity gaps between different countries and how far along these places are in terms of development and growth with the richest countries.?

And in turn, you could measure the difference between Big Macs in the U.S. and Switzerland. An inflated price for Big Macs in Switzerland may indicate that the franc is overvalued and will need to adjust.

But above all remember, this was created in fun and is still used in that manner by The Economist. But there is some value in being able to identify issues that could be explained with more due diligence in the currency world.

Good Investing,

Jason

Jaidah Automotive announces arrival in Doha of Chevrolet's all-new ...

The Camaro - popularly known as a 'muscle car' - debuted back in 1966 and is now in its fifth generation, which was launched in 2009 with a striking new look.

The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 - the most technically advanced car ever developed in its class - has arrived in Jaidah Automotive's Doha showroom.

Powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine producing a mammoth 580 horsepower, the Camaro ZL1 is the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet, with a top speed of 296 km/h, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (delivered through newly-design, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels).

It is also packed with performance technologies, highlighted by Magnetic Ride Control, and advanced materials such as a vented carbon fiber hood insert.

There is a lot more to the car than just power, though. The ZL1 features technologically-advanced and highly developed chassis and suspension systems that help it deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power to complement its high engine output. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. With either transmission, the Camaro ZL1 delivers supercar performance.

The manual transmission has been tuned for improved shift feel, with a dual-mass flywheel, twin-disc clutch, and triple synchros for smooth, precise shifts. Similarly, the '6L90' automatic transmission has been strengthened to handle the torque and horsepower produced by the supercharged engine.

To make the ZL1 perform equally well on street and track, the 6L90 features three distinct drive modes: Drive, where the shift pattern is calibrated for optimal fuel economy; Sport, where the shift pattern is calibrated for more aggressing driving, and Manual, where the 6L90 offers the driver true manual control and maximum performance.

The Camaro ZL1 is the first sports car to feature the third-generation of Magnetic Ride. This advanced suspension system employs valveless damping and Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid technology to match the suspension firmness to match the road and driving conditions. With Magnetic Ride Control, customers enjoy the best of both worlds: a comfortable ride that makes the ZL1 appropriate as a daily driver and the incredibly precise body control that makes the ZL1 so enjoyable on the track.

Also standard on the Camaro ZL1 is Performance Traction Management, which integrates magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control, electronic stability control and electric power steering response to enhance all aspects of performance.

Everything about the ZL1's visual design is directly related to its technology and performance, especially aerodynamics. Chevrolet's designers' goal was to execute function-oriented design with beautifully sculpted forms, creating an imposing, powerful persona. ZL1's signature from the front is the redesigned fascia and aluminum hood with a raised, carbon fiber insert. The fascia includes a front splitter and new vertical fog lamps, this area includes air intakes designed for brake cooling.

High-intensity discharge headlamps and fog lamps are standard and the rear of the car includes a diffuser and spoiler - functional elements that enhance the car's aerodynamics.

The interior of the Camaro ZL1 features standard leather seating surfaces with suede microfiber inserts and heated, powered-adjustable front seats. Microfiber suede is repeated as an accent on the instrument panel. Standard technologies include a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system; USB and Bluetooth connectivity; and rear-park assist with a rear-view camera display in the 7 inch color touch screen, which is located on the dashboard. Other enhancements include a redesigned steering wheel, alloy pedals and a 'Head-Up Display with unique performance readouts.

Mr Mark Jenkins, General Manager of Jaidah Automotive, commented, "Jaidah Automotive is delighted to bring the new Camaro ZL1 to Qatar. The Camaro ZL1 is an exceptional automobile which is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously. It's a car, in fact, which has never been seen in Qatar before."

"It's the most technically-advanced Camaro ever created and can only be seen in Qatar at Jaidah Automotive showrooms. It's simply stunning to look at - a real head-turner - and the stunning looks are matched by the outrageous performance coming from the 6.2-liter engine, not to mention the raft of technological improvements that have been made to the car," he added.

"Since the Camaro was reborn in 2009 with its incredible new look, the marque has gone from strength to strength, and the ZL represents the pinnacle of this particular model. When I say that the Camaro ZL1 can only be seen at the Jaidah Automotive showrooms that is true - but not for long. We anticipate that a lucky few 'owners to be' will soon be showing off the ZL1 on Doha's streets," he concluded.

"Chevrolet has somehow made what was already a fantastic automobile even better and, as a result, we are certain that there is going to be a huge level of interest in the ZL1. Believe me, when you do see a Camaro ZL1 pass you in Doha, you'll know it," added Mr Jenkins.

HEALTH & FITNESS: Michelle Obama's Funny 'Mom Dancing' Skit is ...

By EEW Magazine Health & Fitness Editors

First Lady Michelle Obama?s ?The Evolution of Mom Dancing" skit on NBC?s ?Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,? was a big hit with viewers.

Although many laughed and noticed what a great dancer the Mom-In-Chief is, let?s not lose sight of the purpose behind the chuckle-inducing performance.

Mrs. O, who, we must admit can out-dance President Barack Obama any day, is promoting her ?Let?s Move!? program, which launched two years ago, to help stem the tide of childhood obesity in this country.

Though ?Mom Dancing? moves like ?go shopping, get groceries,? the ?driving the station wagon? and the ?just the hands part of ?Single Ladies,?? are pretty hilarious, the youth health crisis facing our nation is no joke.

Over the past 30 years, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled.

Today, nearly 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese.

When it comes to African American and Hispanic children, the rates get even higher-- approximately 40% of the children are overweight or obese.

Perhaps Mrs. O?s silly Jimmy Fallon-assisted dancing will motivate moms to get up and get moving with their kids.

?In case you missed it, watch the ?Mover-In-Chief? shake her stuff below:

Moms are among the greatest influencers of our children. Do you think Michelle Obama's moves will motivate mothers across America?

UFC 157 prelims: Dennis Bermudez, Matt Grice deliver Fight of the Year candidate

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- UFC 157's preliminary card started with a bang and ended with a snoozer on Saturday.

Dennis Bermudez took a tight split decision in a fight that will go down as a fight of the year candidate. He won it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 over Matt Grice.

Bermudez fell into full mount early in the round and rained punches down on Grice's head, but Grice got out and came back late in the round by leveling Bermudez with a left hook.

But it's the third round of the fight that the MMA world will remember. Bermudez threw everything but the kitchen sink at Grice, but Grice hung in. He continued to throw kicks and punches at Bermudez right up until the horn sounded and a grateful crowd in Anaheim came to its feet.

?That was insane. Somewhere around the second round I woke up and thought 'Oh, I?m in a fight, I think I am in California somewhere'," Bermudez said. "If he?d given me a reason, maybe I would have quit. I had that battle inside me where I maybe could have [quit] but I won that battle and from there got back into the fight."

Brendan Schaub used takedowns, and little else, to beat Lavar Johnson 30-27 on all the judges cards in the final fight of the prelims. With the crowd booing, Schaub repeatedly took down Johnson, who had little takedown defense.

Michael Chiesa continued his unbeaten streak with a rear naked choked of Anton Kuivanen. Chiesa rolled through to get into perfect position. He sunk in a rear naked choke that turned Kuivanen's face red. Kuivanen tapped at 2:29 in the second round.

Sam Stout managed another decision win, taking the split 29-28, 28-29 over Caros Fodor. 14 of his fights have ended with judges cards being read, and this decision put his record to 19-8.

Kenny Robertson made quick work of Brock Jardine. He stopped him with a knee bar at 2:57 in the first round.

"Sometime you gotta go with what you are handed. He was on top of me but didn?t have a great posture," Robertson said after the fight. "I saw the opening, so I grabbed his leg and hyper-extended it and he verbally submitted. I?ll take it. It is a first round win in the UFC."

For the card's opener, Nah-Shon Burrell and Yuri Villefort put on a thrilling bout that ended with Burrell taking the decision 30-27, 29-28, 29-28. Villefort had a strong first round, grabbing Burrell for two different submission attempts. But Burrell fought back in the second round, busting up Villefort's face with smart boxing. In the final round, Villefort grabbed a heel hook, but left his face open. Burrell used the opportunity to punch Villefort several time.

After the thriller by Burrell and Villefort, Neil Magny and Jon Manley's bout was a let down for the crowd in Anaheim. They spent much of the bout in a clinch, with Manley trying for a takedown that never came. Magny took the bout with better striking as the bout wore on.

95% The Central Park Five

All Critics (61) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (58) | Rotten (3)

Expect your blood pressure to rise during The Central Park Five.

The doc is rife with smart or wrenching or shameful moments. The fresh interviews with the accused, now men, are invaluable.

As grim a portrait of the criminal justice system as can be imagined.

How could this second crime have occurred? The film asks that question but only partly answers it, and in the process it raises an even more troubling one.

"The Central Park Five" is worth seeing, both for the ways it's timeless and for the ways it encapsulates an era.

What's amazing about listening to them speak now, often through tears, is the absence of bitterness.

Like the "Paradise Lost" films, it's a shocking but clear-eyed portrait of injustice.

The Central Park Five is such a moving piece of work, it is difficult to watch at times.

It shows what happens when police and prosecutors abuse their power.

Puts the crime and the times in sharp perspective.
