Former youth soccer coach Jose Duarte faces 60 years in prison

A former youth soccer coach was convicted Thursday of lewd acts involving six boys he coached.

The Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated about 5 1/2 hours before returning its verdict against Jose Duarte, who turned 44 Thursday.

The six-man, six-woman panel convicted Duarte of 20 felony counts of lewd acts with a child and five felony counts of showing harmful material to a minor.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Henry Hall ordered Duarte to remain jailed without bail while he awaits sentencing April 2.

Duarte is facing at least 60 years to life in state prison, according to Deputy District Attorney Rachel Moser Greene.

Duarte coached USA, an independent league team that practiced and played at locations including MacArthur Park and Vista Hermosa Park.

The crimes - which involved six boys who were between 11 and 14 years old - occurred between May 2009 and June 2011, primarily in his apartment in the Mid-City area of Los Angeles or inside a van in the garage, according to the prosecutor.

"He was using his position of trust," Greene said outside court.

Duarte was arrested in June 2011 after a 13-year-old boy reported that he had been sexually assaulted by the soccer coach, with police locating two other victims before he was charged.

He was eventually charged with lewd acts involving three other boys.
